I just got an 05yfz450. It will push start but won't start on battery. It doesnt have any power plus it backfires a lot. I was told it needed rejetted. I was wondering what could be wrong with it?

is it getting consistent spark? Clean carb, read jetting posts... let us know what jets are in it and what mods are done to it...

i would also check your valves to make sure they are in spec.

Okay update! My friend rode it and he said that it had no power, couldn't push start(wouldn't fire up), wouldn't go over 20mph, and backfired like crazy... Whats the problem? We also flooded it trying to start... so could it just be a spark plug and jetting?

if your jetting is fine you may have to replace your stator, rectifier, and sparkplug etc check out the whole ignition system it could even be your cdi. mine had the same problem it was the rectifier and the stator

Jetting is probably not fine, guy told me it needed to be rejetted. When I first got it, it would push start pretty easy and go but the next day, it wouldn't push start unless it was pulled with another 4wheeler, and it had no power. But, I also flooded it trying to start it, so i could of fouled a plug. Could it be the valves?

do you know what jets are in it? because if youre flooding it its running too rich but it could be other things as well. replace the plug and find out what jets are in it

Before you screw anything up, you need to do this: Take off air filter, filter box, side plastics, gas tank. Turn it to the side on way or another to get throttle cable off, two allen bolts that hold the cover on. Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors, twist it so you can get out the side where your left leg goes. Drain into a drip pan, fuel will go everywhere when you tilt it. 17mm bolt on the bottom, take that off. There are 2 jets you can now see. Use a flat head to take the one out, that is your Pilot Jet. Use a 6mm socket for the other, that's your main jet. Write the numbers and or logo's down. The Pilot will be a smaller number.

Next take off the top lid, same size allen head as the side. There is philips head screw that you need to take off, do that without stripping it. Carefully pull the whole slide out. On the top of that slide, there's another allen head. Take out the needle and write down the position the little clip is on the notches, from the top down. There should be some letters on the needle too, write them down.

Stuff a CLEAN rag in the intake of your head, check your plug while the rest of the quad is apart. You can also try to crank it with the plug out. It should spins quite easily. If not, your battery and connections need help or replacing. Inside the starter switch can be pulled apart, cleaned, and lubed with contact grease too.

Post your jetting sizes and needle sizes. Carefully clean your carburator while its out, don't use solvent on that black piece as it can destroy it. This sounds like a pain, but if you take your time you will save some bucks and learn how to do this.
