Is there any mud or debris wrapped around the shift lever?
Is the lever hitting the side cover?
If the answers are No, then you need to pull the right side cover off and look at the shift mechanism. It sounds like something broke or fell apart.

uhh its the shifter mechanism there are these 2 little square metal pieces about over an inch and one side is rounded. in other words the square side is where it should be rounded. so its in backwards.

The trannys in the r are built alot heavier than the yfz don't worry
you don't have a huge problem. Do you ride it hard? One thing you
can do is tear it down and polish both the shift fork shafts and the
shift forks were the slide on them . Once you tear it apart you will easily
see they are a little rough and just need alittle help. nothing major.
Once it is tore down look very close at your shift drum and see if it is
sticking. If you just pull the clutch out you can watch how it shifts and
then go from there

What oil are you using? I switched to 20/50 when it started to warm up and mine did the same thing (regulal yfz), then I went back to 10/40 and it wouldn't stick all the time.
