Suspension Question

I want to adjust my stock shocks somewhat for XC. Should I soften the compression all the way or take all the preload out? Just want something a little better adjusted than stock. I weigh about 175 and they're '04 shocks.

The random question....I have to tighten my chain after every like two rides. The thing loosens up all the time. I make sure everything is tight as possible after I adjust it. Why is this?

because the 04 chain adjsutment is close to the worst in history and will always work itself loose and pull sideways.

but, check the condition of the chain and sprockets, engine mounts and carrier bearings as well.
i would go about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way out for your size. Adjust sag first. Im sure sidewinder will chime in here sometime, and go to his YFZ450 garage link, or google it. He has all the info. i dont know about the chain, maybe something isnt tightening right.
Someone call my name? :mhihi:

Adjusting preload will just change the ride height, not the stiffness. To change the compression you'll have to play with the screw on the top of the shock body. Like Joester said, check out the link in my sig, there's a complete guide to set up your suspension.
what'd i tell ya? :icon_biggrin:
Thanks guys. And yes, I have to agree, the chain setup is horrible.

save your money and keep your eyes peeled for a 06+ swingarm, thats the first year they started making the new carrier design.

as for xc adjustments, i run my preload pretty much as high as it will go, it sags just right for me, and im around 180 fully loaded. as for compression and rebound, read up and learn what each adjustment does, and play around with them to dial it in, in general, you want your compression as soft as you can go without bottoming out. and you want your rebound as fast as possible without bucking and bouncing you up. you have to find that sweet spot that suits you and your riding style.

very true but remember with a 06+ conversion your going to also need to get the 06+ brake caliper brake stay and brake line as all these items are different and you wont be able to use your stock 04-05 stuff.
