Recently had to replace my steering stem on my 06 YFZ 450 due to a crash. I located a new, stock aftermarket stem. The listing said for 2007 through 2009 and I thought they would interchange. I installed it with a new pitman arm but it now has too much play, about a 1/4 inch to each side. So much so, that even though the bars are straight, the front tires track left or right. I'm going to locate a used OE, but I was wondering if it has to be off another 06. I have check eBay and what I'm finding is 04-05 and 07-09. Is the 06 steering stem specific to the 06, or is there another underlying issue on why so much play with the aftermarket stem that was listed for 07-09?

I’m definitely not an expert in those model years but just checking the oem manuals 04-05 has the same oem part #, and 07-09 has the same part #’s with 06 being the only one with it’s oem part # for the stem. So it would seem like you are correct. Hopefully someone else can confirm for you.

06 yr is 1" taller stem then the 04/05 and the reason they list 07-09 different is because those yrs use "fat bars" 1 1/8th 04-06 use the smaller 7/8" (?) handle bars.

04/05 had tall riser 7/8" handler bars
06 had 1" taller stem using the 7/8" bars but not taller handle bars. Handle bar was more flat.
07-09 uses the same 06 1" taller stem but switched to the 1 1/8" fat bars and kept the flat handle bar rise.
