Solid Steel Sub Frame Ever Saw One

Hi old member here doing a comeback from '05 so you can say Im a newbie again, but anyhow I bought a semi-built YFZ and started tearing it apart. I noticed I have a sub frame made out of solid 3/4 flat steel that somone torched cut and welded a front and rear tab to for the fenders etc. on the rear of it is a big plate with YFZ 450 laser etched in. Did this ever exhist from a shop or is it a backyard bob type thing? I'll get it off and post pics soon, it must wiegh alot looking at it.

Doesn't sound like anything I've ever seen or heard of.

I will say that, that maybe a good fix for the crappy cast aluminum OEM sub frames, but unless the frame is gusseted to accomadate a beefy subby like that the frame will be the victom.
I had the same feeling about it, is a 4 point worth buying or should I just get a 6 and have the tabs welded? Hate to ruin the new frame with a bad set-up but also hate to ruin its nice powdercoat job either.

The 4 point will probably act the same as the sub frame you have on the now. Basicly a stronger chromoly frame that will just cause something else to give like the sub frame mounts.

I would highly recommend a 6 point and have the tabs mounted for it, otherwise I'd stick with an OEM cast aluminum one until then. I'd much rather replace a sub frame rather then a complete frame.

Some 4 points are worth buying, most aren't. In my opinion, the subframe BADLY needs the bottom mounts like a 6 point has because that's what gives it the strength. LSR makes a 4 point that has the bottom mounts, it only uses the top OEM mount and the bottom weld on mounts. I would stay away from the aftermarket chromoly stock replacement subframes. The stock aluminum subframe is designed to break before the frame does. So if you have an chromoly subframe that doesn't have the bottom mounts, it will act like a big lever pulling on the frame and it will eventually break the frame. Most times they will break right under the subframe mounts. You can get aftermarket 6 points that are bolt on pieces, but I don't know if I think they're as strong or not.

So basically............if it doesn't have the bottom mounts, stay away from it. In my opinion anyway.
Another option would be to get some subframe support braces. They just bolt on to a stock (or stock style) subframe and bolt on lower on the frame to mimic a 6 point. Most of the ones I have seen bolt on where the stock rear fender braces bolt on the frame. I know walsh, atv four play, and burgard cycle make them. Burgard actually has some pics of them in their sponsor section on here!
