I currently have a 2003 raptor 660 and i know some guy that will trade me a 04 yfz 450 w/ an exhaust and "After market carb intake 13:1 high compression pistons" thats what ad says. So what im asking are this bikes reliable once someone tears into the motor

It depends on the hours and if it has had a full rebuild yet. The 04-05 are notorious for siezing rod bearins after the have alot of hours on them. You never know it could only be an hour away from siezing.
dude that is the 1st time ive ever herd of the YFZ's having rod bearing problems.......
my 05 has never had crank problems....
i actually am doing a top-end rubuild now and everything in there still looks brand spanking new!!
just wanted 2 do it and drop a high compression piston in there. but it is running like a champ before i tore it apart!!!!!!

billy i would ask when it was rebuilt and see how hard the guy rides it, the fuel he uses etc. 13:1 compression isnt extream for there bikes at all. however u sould be running higher octane fuel with them to avoid detination.
see if u can find out the guys motives 4 wanting 2 trade....
good luck!!!

hes a smaller dealer and trades to make money...so im throwing in some cash
ya the YFZ is worth more $$$ than the rapy!! a buddy of mine just sold his for 2K.
u dont know anyone that a mechanic or at least mechanically inclined that might be able 2 take a look at the bike with u?
and like i said earlyer id ask when the bike what rebuilt? what exactly was rebuilt? maintinance done? etc.
the crappy thing about dealers is that they usually dont know the history of the bike which is bad.
I ended up buying it...this is soo fast and crazy compared to the raptor....it handles awesome and is race ready for me. He told me less then 10 hours and i kinda didnt beleive it then he showed me all the paper work and everything...thing is awesome..cant wait to ride tomorow.
... The 04-05 model yfz's ARE NOTORIOUS for having rod bearing problems. Yamaha used a crappy oiling design called a "Splash System" in the beginning but changed it in '06. I have an '04 with a pretty powerful motor but haven't had any bottom end problems yet.. Knock on wood. Ask him does the bike have the Oil Mod done to it. This corrects the old splash design and takes some of the guess work out of the buying process. Slinger is right you never know with the used bikes it could go ka-plooey in a day or may last a few years... Thats the fun part about buying a used ride lol
oil pump was changed in 07 dude.
and the 04's where the only ones with bad crank barings (yamaha had a bad batch) factory paid for them 2 be fixed though that what ive herd
From what I've read and experienced its not if but when will an 04-05 crank lock up. My '05 was on its 2nd crank as far as I know when I got it. After the motor let go again I just put in a stock '07 motor so I got the new oiling system. Just my $.02
I've probably got over 200 hrs on my first 04 motor and never did anything to the bottom end except replace 2 gear and bent shift forks. It's been re-ringed 3 times with the same crank and bearings.
dude when they are gona go, there gona go it doesnt matter what year u have.
I've saw way more 06 and newer cranks lock up than 04 05's. One of my good friends bougt a brand new 07 and about 12hrs later the crank locked up and top of the rod broke. Another one of my friends had an 08 and the crank seized 4 hours after he got it. A guy at a local race a few weeks back put a 06 crank in an 04 motor because he was worried it was going to lock up, 2 motos afterwards, his motor was toast. Bottom rod bearing shattered. Just depends on how lucky you get I guess.
just thought id add also the 04's have been out the longest obviously so your gunna see more failures with them then an 06 even if there the same
Exactly.
I have a 2005 450 and last week my rod bearing went out on my crank. Gave no signs of problem just went from haulin ass to toast. Im doin the oil mod and pump upgrade now so this doesnt happen again. Oh well....
It can still happen, bearings dont last forever.
Just tryin to delay the process.. :icon_biggrin:
Heard that.
