Hello everyone! New member, old rider. I recently purchased a 2013 450 black edition, good shape for its age and having a blast so far. I had an 06 some years ago and the one thing I noticed is the 2013 doesn't have shock reservoirs on the front shocks and I know for a fact my 06 did. the 06 was certainly stock / OEM and I'm pretty sure the 2013 is too. They dont ride bad, and I'm no shock expert, but I think typically shocks with external reservoirs are view to be a bit superior?

I have no need to go crazy with aftermarket shocks or extending anything and I mostly trail ride, but does anyone have any insight or comparision between the two OEM styles? Its easy to find the OEM reservoir ones at a decent price if its an upgrade.

Thanks in advance for any helpful replies, feels nice to ride again after not having one for a while!

Thanks for the input everyone! Gonna keep my eyes open and see if I can cheaply do an oem upgrade and yeah, keep the non reservoir ones around for a bit in case I have to go back for some reason.

The last reboot of the carb version quad had a few different things like the pogo shock, different heads, different valves, and a different carb. They are still good bikes and will have a few different tuning options that are not the same as the original due to the head and carb. All the parts are pretty mixable between them, but the tuning is slightly different due to those changes.

The front shocks should be 15.75in eye to eye (If you go with Foxes they are longer 16" if I recall right). I think the rear is also a pogo shock. So, If you do change that make sure you have the right end type and length because not every carb year was the same for that.
