I've done it a couple ways.

1) stand the axle on it's end and put a block of wood on the carrier, then knock the piss out of the block of wood.
2) Leave the axle and carrier in the quad, and put the block of wood on the end of the axle and knock the piss out of it.

Which way are you trying to remove it? The carrier comes off of the brake side, or the axle slides out to the sprocket side. Whichever way you want to look at it.

We have always left the carrier in and wood block and knock the hell out of it too!

I use a couple of ratcheting tie downs around the wheel hub and the swing arm. I tighten them down as far as I can and that gets some real good constant pressure on the axle then a few knocks with a sledge will pop it right out.
