Odd Problem At The Dunes

857 Views 13 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  soonerlightning
Yesterday while out at the dunes I noticed my quad would almost pop/sputter when I held it about 1/2 throttle just cruising but if I opened her up all the way she would run like a raped ape. Several people could hear the sputter when riding behind me also. I told one of my buddies (who rides a banshee) that it was acting like his 2 stroke and loading up.

Here is a list of mods to help diagnose

Stock style filter no lid
Baffle removed from stock exhaust
Cam mod

162 Main
45Pilot
3rd clip on Ncvq.

Im open to suggestions.

Try changing the main to 165

Have you ridden it before withe the mods and the jetting the way it is now ? If so how did she respond.
mine use to do that when i put in the Ncvq needle... i put it to the 2nd clip and it fixed it
I actually had it at a 165 main for a bit and it seemd a tad sluggish. I will swap it back and see how it acts.

I have been riding it with the mods/jetting like it is for some time and it had been fine.

Miller I will also give that a try and see what happens.
For clip position...... where are you counting from? Just double check that you are counting from the point. I would think that the 3rd clip position should work, but you might want to try the 2nd clip position, since you are running a stock exhaust.
Just a quick suggestion. Go back to the 165. But, if the weather is different, the bike will run different too. I have a small note book I keep in my tool box with jetting changes, A/F screw settings for different riding/weather. I write down what worked for the given conditions. Sounds nerdy, but keeps me from fighting jetting issues.
I would also check to see if the fuel screw is still in/all the way in. they can vibrate out.

I am counting from the blunt end not the point. So I should RAISE not LOWER correct? In other words drop the clip down toward the pointed end

I actually still have the stock fuel screw. I dont know if it would vibrate out or not.
always count from the top to the bottom... so if you are at the 3rd clip.. move the clip up one, which will lower the needle and lean it out.. and remember... closed to 1/4 throttle is pilot jet.... 1/4 to 3/4 is needle... 3/4 to full throttle is main jet..... so when he says it is sputtering when he is holding it at 1/2 throttle , it is the needle that is metering how much fuel is getting to the motor. there are kind of grey area's where one kind of bleeds to the other as the switch is taking place.. but that is pretty much how it works... but ... each motor is alittle differant.. one guys rings didn't seat as good as another... so he needs a bigger jet becuse the vacume signal is not as strong.... one guy uses more oil or thicker oil on his air filter, which makes it want to suck fuel harder and would need a smaller jet... valves... there is so much which can change from one bike to another... so telling some one i have those mods and this is what it should be mite get him close.. but then agin mite not work so good for him.... just my .02

good advice right there
Very true, 1/2 throttle is likely your need, not the main.
I was thinking needle but didnt want to interrupt my riding to change it up. I just made sure I was hauling @$$ to prevent the sluggish/sputtering feel.

Thanks for the advise guys.
