Noob Question? Engine Cases

I got a 07 yzf 450 the chain slipped and broke the case around the shifter. My question is what years are the cases interchangeable. The reason is i found 04-05 cases really cheap ($150) but mine is a 07.Also this is my first quad i ever owned (i just got it monday) and a friend of mine has a 01 raptor willing to trade me plus $300 for my yfz the way it sits, is this a good deal or not i prefer the 450. I think my yfz looks better and feels more comfortable. Thanks

do not trade for that raptor the 01 has tranny issues big time...plus the yfz is a way better quad. I just traded my raptor + cash for a yfz and i love it.

the cases should all be the same correct me if im wrong
'07 clutch side case is a must
I would just buy new cases for the 07. you can get them for a few hundred bucks.
If you get 04-05 cases you will need to/ should do a oil modification, which will add money unless you do it yourself. The 07 cases are already upgraded with a oil squirter. If you want to do the oil squirter to the 04-05 cases add roughly $200.
Raptors are heavy pig!!! The trans as stated are notorious for number of problems, the one way bearings in the starters are junk. The fames are absolutely garbage!! I had the same year and i would never own one again.....pretty much everyone on here will tell you the same and from experience. Cases should be the same as the 04-05's you found.

The oil mod isn't in the center cases themselves, it's in the RH cover. The part of the motor that the water pump is in.
Except for the length of two case half bolts, all year case halves are the same.
well my input on this is once u get ur new case i would invest in a case saver 20-70 bucks its alot less then a case as u already know

Are you saying he only needs the left side case because that is the only one broke? Then mating it up to a 07 case?
If you are talking about using both 04-05, if the cases he found already has a mod done then, ok that wouldn't be bad. From what I have heard, the cases are machined together. So I would not try to mix and match the trans case halves. No experience, it might work, but I would be a little nervous.

Isn't that only for the 07 upgrade, not the oil mod hole?

That's correct. He already has the '07 side cover, so any year cases will work with his internal parts.

I have done 4 different motors, where I only replaced the half of the case that broke. All of them are doing just fine.
The only thing you have to watch for is getting the cyl. area matched up and flat. You can do this by bumping the cases with a soft mallet. I have noticed that you sometimes have to do the same thing to new "matched" case halves.
sorry i ment i would buy new 07 cases
You guys are going to give this guy a heart attack.
Yes you can buy any year case halves and they will work. Your best bet would be to just buy the left case half that you broke. You will be able to swap the case out quick and easy, I just did this exact job last weekend and it took 3.5 hours.
You have the 07 oil mod already. If you get 04-06 cases you will have to put your 07 oil pump on the 04-06 case, but the other stuff is fine.
DADDIO is setting you in the right direction. Look on ebay and get a left case half. Hopefully you get one with a good main bearing, if not buy the keeper screws and swap your 07 bearing into the new case half, but you MUST buy new keeper screws.
Good luck, and buy a TM Design case saver.

Just to clarify, if you buy older case halves you don't need to do the oil mod!

Thanks.................. But I would get the new UPP or Moose case saver. It fills the whole area around the sprocket with polyurathane. The TM Designs ones flex over time and become usless.
I have a couple new TM ones if anybody is interested. $10 ea + shipping.
Ok let get this straight. The cases I'm looking at are 04-05 my bike is an 07 so there shouldn't be any modifcation to the cases for the oil squirter. Everything should just bolt up with no problems right? What I'm thinking about doing is just replacing the left side insted of both sides. Will this work being not matched cases? So i shouldn't need to do anything else.I plan on getting cases savers before i go riding. If there is anything i need to know please tell me.I plan on buying the cases tomorrow and i would like to know should i buy them or just save and get new ( the cases were welded on where the clutch spring lever is on the motor) and if i deceide to replace both halves do i need to mod the cases as mine is a 07.
How cheap $$?

And simply............ Yes that will work, without any other modifcations.
$120 shipped but they are used.If everything go's right i'll be riding in a couple of weeks.I have a friend who has been riding and repairing of 17 years and he will be doing the case swap for me. He rides a raptor ( not the one wanting to trade me,thats another one of my friends)
I personally would pass on those cases if I understand you correctly. There is a set in the for sale section on here that are in good shape. I looked at them just to have since they are a good deal.
For one I was under the impression you can't weld on the cases because they are cast alum. So I don't know how someone welded it around the clutch lever.
Secondly why would you want to buy a case half that isn't correct when there are plenty cases out there that are perfectly fine.
Just something to think about.
I agree......... $120 for a set of repaired cases is kind of steep.

BTW. Cast aluminum can be welded, but it takes a lot of skill to do it correctly.
