Neutral Light Problem

8641 Views 13 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  mxthunder
so when I was riding today, I noticed that sometimes, not all the time, when I put my 05 yfz into neutral the neutral light wouldn't come on. But then 2 minutes later when I put it into neutral it would ,then seconds later, wouldn't come on again. Now I got it into the garage and the neutral light works fine. Anyone have this problem? Let me know any suggestions? Loose wire? bad connection?

let me know
this happened to last summer but I didn't do anything about it but now it's bothering me

any help is really appreciated

Bad connection means loose wire pretty much ;)

Check the connection under the front plastic, obviously, duh me lol
my first yfz light stopped comin on after a hard day of riding.. and it never worked again.. i took it too houston yamaha too get a new spark plug and oil change and brakes.. and after that they fixed it.. guessing a loose wire or a bad connection.. follow the wires lol

yea that's exactly how it happened after a hard day of riding...aight thanks man
k so i looked through all the wires today and couldn't find any loose ones. I ended up just unplugging wires then plugging them back in.....but I got a feeling the problem might occur again.....hmmm.......oh but I did notice on the little wire connected to the negative wire right where it connects to the battery has potential of maybe being the problem...could that maybe be it??? I unplugged that one though and the neutral light was still on and the only thing it did was not let me start the quad
Clean em up, see how it works then
You did try the wire on the sender right under the shifter right. That may have corrosion and not always making a good contact. maybe try pulling that off and cleaning it then reconnecting it..
Your problem is probably the nuetral switch down by the shifter. My nuetral light hasnt worked for a year. I took the neutral switch off my other yfz put it in the one that wasnt working and now it works the switch was junk so now I got a new one coming. The switch looks like a spark plug, and has a probe type thing on the end that goes in the motor. The probe type thing wasnt fully engaging on mine. It has like a spring in the switch, mine would go in but wouldnt come back out all the way to sense the light being on. But I got it fixed now, probably the problem your having.
I just took mine off, including the wire and bulbs to save weight and plugged the hole with a drain plug.
k so I found out it is the switch down by the clutch.....so how do I pull off that and clean it? Do I loosen that bolt or do I just pull it off?

let me know
thanks
You really cant clean it, it would be esier to replace it. New on only costs $25.00 All you do is put a wrench on it and turn it out like a bolt. Check the probe on the end when you take it out, it maybe is just a little dirty. Mine was just plain broken, if it still dont work then you probably better off just replacing it.
Back in my day, we didn't have neutral indicator lights... :mhihi:
I took off the neutral light thing down by the shifter and the probe on the end was clean....so I put it back on and the light works but I dont want that happening during a race....is there any way to keep it clean other than taking it off? also on the part that you can spin with the wire there seemed to be some sand pebbles in there because when I spun it, I could feel it...anyway to get those out of there?
I have found that the culprit is usually the connection between the sensor that goes into the case, and the wire that connects to it. Dirt, water and oil get in there and cause a bad connection. If I wiggle mine, the light will flicker on and off, but it doesnt really bother me.
