Lighter Rims = Faster Accelleration?

I got to thinking about this, would it be better go go with hiper non beadlock 8X8s opposed to beadlocks because there is less rim to get spinning? Am I crazy or would this be something to look into?

it all depends on how you ride, where you ride, and if your already putting down enough power to break the tires loose at any rpm on the surface you ride most often.
Also I doubt there is much of a weight difference between beadlocked and non beadlocked seeings how the bead lock rings are plastic and weigh next to nothing.
Rotating mass isn't just actual mass. Plus, with the rings being farther away from the axle (and bolts remember) it affects it even more. However, this isn't something that would make a big difference unless you are draging (sand) or maybe TT...but in that case you would be running 10x10 and probably want a beadlock for the reason that you don't want to break any beads.
For MX beadlock is the only way to go. If you want a light but strong beadlock stay away from HiPer and go with ITP. I've had ITP's, Douglas, HiPer, and Champion and ITP was by far the lightest.

I have some hiper 10X5 4-1 offset in the front, bought em used and havn't had a problem.

I had a 265r before i got my yfz and i threw some douglas conventional beadlocks on it 10X10 (i had a couple sets of 10" tires) and it seemed to bog it down a little. Thats why I was wondering now when im looking for some rims to go with my new fronts if I should go with beadlocks or not. I know that beadlocks are best for the rear in mx, but i havnt had any problems breaking beads yet so maybe I'm nieve. But I was reading on cintripical(sp?) force to get tires spinning and was curious to see what everyones input is on this.
Yeah 10" beadlocks are a few pounds heavier and its harder to get them going than 8x8's. Beadlocks aren't necessary on the front really at all but a must for the rear at low pressure and big jumps. You'll see. ITP 8x8, you wont regret it.
ITP Beads are garbage I've seen more than one set completly collapse at the track. Yeah Jeffery's right they are the lightest but they're also the weakest. I'd go with a set of DWT beads if I had the money or a set of OMF's they use a DWT wheel and weld their ring onto it.
ITP had a bad batch for a little while but I'm pretty sure those problems are long gone. I own 3 sets of Douglas beadlocks now, 2 conventional and 1 billet center and a full set of hiper dual beadlock rears and single fronts. HiPer is pretty heavy compared to the douglas.
Hiper 8X8 with 3-5 offset a solid choice? Then change my 20"s for some 18"s and drop the rear sprocket(2 teeth or 3 teeth?) Had my TCS 18.5" come in today gona throw them on some LT a arms and I should be set up for a while.
Dropping the tire size to 18 will minus top end and give tons of bottom. And dropping the teeth in the rear sprocket will give you top end back.. and reduce bottom again.. And yes the hiper 8x8 beadlocks are heavier.. It depends, I have the Tech3 dual beadlocks with the integrated hubs. Heavier then my old .190 douglas rims? yes. Will I ever be buying another set due to one breaking or bending? no, Hiper doesn't lie that they are lighter then aluminum but are TONS stronger. And for being how strong the tech3's are and still being next best in weight compared to .190 aluminum.. Believe me, buy a set and be satisfied..
Honestly if you don't want to buy hipers I would buy the OMF beadlocks or the Douglas ultimate beadlocks, Just depends what you want.. You should be fine.
i have been running hipers and OMF beadlocks for 2 years now.. Well this is interesting this was brought up because i switch my tires over to stock rims to have a set to practice on. Well, i noticed, yes NOTICED a difference with the lighter wheel/tire combo. not much, but after 2 years of having beadlocks, it was a big change to go to a stock wheel. But its still not worth the sacrifice during racing. beadlocks in the rear are the only way to go if your MX racing, unless you dont like finishing the race
I have to agree beadlock is the only way to go for mx, I wish I had a set.

Listen man, I admire your bravery....but this is on the ragged edge of being suicidal. You do NOT insult, speak down on, or even suggest that Hipers are anything short of the Holy Grail on these forums unless you have already set your affairs in order and said goodbye to your loved ones. You have stepped in it now my friend...if I were you, I would delete my account, shut down the email address you registered with, wipe your hard drive and then burn the computer you are typing on. It might be a good idea to move to another state as well.

Nice knowing ya.

New guys take heed of the sacrifice this man has made. Remember, he isn't really dead as long as he exists in our memories. Let his last misguided act not be what we remember him by, rather lets remember him as a racer who enjoyed life right up until he made his fatal mistake. RIP Unlukky...if only your screen name had not been so accurate.

:bawling:
Just stating the facts. Hipers are great but they are heavier than ITP's, yes I do run a full set of Hipers, and yes I do/have ran ITP's also, along with Champion, Douglas, and even OMF.
