Make sure you line the splines up with the steering flag right. Also, if you wanted to, you could put a little grease on the upper mount so it rotates smoothly.
Installing New Stem
so i got the old one off. the new one will be here sat or monday. is there any specific instructions or things i need to do (or should do), look out for or anything like that when i drop the new one in?

what do you mean line up with the steering flag right? the splines that go in the hole where the tie rods attach to?
Correct. Line it up right the first time, you shouldn't have to adjust the tierods if done correctly.
by lining it up you mean the cup on the stem strait?
Just line it up so the handlebars are straight when wheels are straight.
just do what you did to take it off backwards. sidewinder actually has good advice for once :icon_bolt: :neener: :neener:
