How To Tighten Suspension?

2779 Views 19 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  speeddemon1187
hey guys.. i have an 04 yfz 450 and am just wondering how to tighten the suspension? i know there is the washer thing and if you tighten it, it will make the spring tighter but is that the only way to tighten it? i am bottoming off some jumps so would like them stiffer. thanks

By tighten, do you mean stiffen?

If so, the jam nuts on top of the spring are not used to stiffen the shocks. They are used to adjust ride height. To stiffen the shocks, you have to adjust the compression which is the knob on the shock resivior. Turn it to the right (tighten) to stiffen the suspension.
thanks alot, i am new to this site and did not know there was a 'search' button, so once i typed it in i quickly found what i was looking for.
for us people with stock suspension its the flatblade screw on the outside of the top of the shock

there you go. and yes, i DID do this in paint, so shut up!

rebound adjustment is the screw on the inside bottom og the shock if you want to mess with that.

So... You back that screw out and put Simple Green in it? Sounds like an plan! lol
you see where joester pointed at "ride hight adj" you want to go out and get a spanner wrench, and tighten that down some. should help..

It will make the suspension stiffer, but it's not the proper way to do it. If you run the preload down in order to stiffen the shock, it's gonna change the ride height for one, and the shock also won't work as well as it could.
thanks for the info guys! is there any 'right' ride height if your not racing? all i do is trail ride and hit some homemade jumps.. and take it to the off moto track when i can so is there a proper ride height for me or no?
Well, you want the quad to sit as low to the ground as you can get it without it bottoming out all the time. The lower to the ground it is, the better it will handle but you also don't want to be slamming the ground over every little bump either.
so if i tighten the nuts on the top it will make the 44wheeler sit lower or higher?

If you tighten the nuts, it will make it sit higher off the ground. When you tighten those nuts, it pushes the spring down toward the bottom of the shock which will raise the quad up. Tighten the nuts will raise the ride height, loosening the nuts will lower the ride height.
i finally got around to tightening my suspension.. i tightened up my front no problem (was really easy to turn) but i COULD not move the back one, not at all, it wouldnt even loosen. is this a problem? maybe its seized? need some help please

put some penetrating stuff on it, good as gold. Mine were hard to move too but a big hammer and a BIGGER screwdiver did the trick.
lol, same here. big hammer + big screwdriver + penetrating oil = win!

I know this is old, but what is the screw at the bottom of the shock facing the inside of the bike used for? it is a Flat head, and as your turn it you can hear it click every 1/4 turn or so?

That's the Rebound adjuster
If I tighten is it more reboud or less?
Tightening it (clockwise) should result in faster (more) rebound.

I've been researching how to tweek my stock suspension for a couple days now and this really helped... I found it in another post but I'll re-post it here.
