I've wondered the same thing, and after a quick search on the ever- helpful Internet, I have found that I should do the following for a nikasil cylinder:
Nothing.
Deglaze with a scotch brite pad.
Hone with a diamond hone.
Hone with a dingleberry hone.
Use wd40 and SOS pad.

the correct honing will create a rougher surface that holds oil and will also allow the rings to seat with the cylinder.

an SOS may change the appearance, but won't bite into the coating enough to create a good crosshatching pattern, most rigid and some ball hones wont either ,need aluminum oxide abrasive.
