Headlights

The day I bought my bike until today, my headlights do not work unless my engine is running. Is there an easy fix to correct the problem. It would be nice for it to work if when night riding I break down, crash, or just want some light.

Nope, the way they are hooked up only work when the engine's running. This is normal.

Thanks for the response however thats a hazard for me due to some deep woods logging road night rides in B.F.E . (i.e. I ran out of gas once and it took hours for someone to find me. I remember seeing their headlights miles away across the valley. If only I have had a headlight they could have found me faster. Or if I crashed it would be nice for someone to find me.) I guess I'll look into a hardwire option or a high powered small pocket flashlight which I could use if my arms are not mangled.
theres probably a way to bypass that, but then ur batttery would wear out and your quad wouldnt start anyways, lol. that sucks getting lost. i got lost (at least i was with my family) at chadwick near springfield MO for 6 hours, me and my bro were soo close to out of gas and my dads arm was bleeding every where, and our firends raptor kept stalling and acting up and it was pouring and lightning and it was really cold. it sucked soo bad. I hate that lost feeling.
Upgrade to ricky stator and get a better battery. The ricky stator comes with a harness that lets your lights work with just key on, no engine running. Might as well throw in some HID's while your at it since they are so cheap these days.

...... or go search and there are threads on how to modify the wiring so your lights will work with the engine not running.
thanks guys for the responses. I dont have any ridding buddies that have a yfz so I didnt know if it was the norm or not. I just know that the other guys have headlights with the engine off. I thought maybe I was given a bike with a defective switch or something.
On a side note. 3 years ago a buddy following the pack at night wrecked and went over a semi steep cliff and nested 100+ feet down. We turned around and followed the trail down. With little too no skid marks on the trail I'm sure we wouldnt have found him but, ofcourse, his headlights remained on.
you noted that the battery would drain and the bike wouldnt start. Does the yfz require alot of cranking amps? I ask that because buddies of mine can just sit there and drink beers for a half an hour with their lights on and their bikes start up with no problem.

Does anyone know if the stator on the 450r is the same as the previous models?

There are no previous models to the YFZ450R.
