Fuel Customs Kit...brand New

I just opened up the box of my Fuel Customs kit for my '04 YFZ and after tinkering with all the parts in the box I came to the conclusion that I'm missing a critical part.

It seems as though the actuall intake ring that the filter and the tube mounts to is missing. I have a hard time believeing that the filter mounts directly to the plastic intake tube. I did notice that the tube has a small, slippery plastic bead around it, but rubber to plastic contact in this matter isn't sturdy enough IMO for running it that way.

Here's a pic of a another kit installed in my doggie, Grant's YFZ, notice the intake ring...

This is a pic of the kit that I just bought...

Your intake looks just like mine. So, if your missing something then, so am I.
SO I'm assuming that you just mounted the filter directly to the intake tube :icon_eek: ...

If so that just dosen't seem right to me man. I'm curious as to why I didn't get that intake ring with the set screws in it. I plan on using this set-up without my air box, but IMO rubber to smooth plastic contact aren't gonna hold up for MX.
Not missing anything Chris. I've seen 3 FCI's in person, including mine, and they all mount the filter directly to the intake tube. The correct way to mount it is to put the filter on intake, and slide the filter forward far enough so it sits inside the mounting bracket ring.

Thanks for sharing Cam.

I actually tried following those same exact steps you speak of, not installed on the quad. DAMN is it a pain in the ass to slide the bracket over the rubber filter sleeve lol.. I couldn't imagine how hard it would be while on the bike. It seems as though once you work the tube into the filter boot, it expands which makes for a PITA to slide the braket on.
Right, which is the reason I think it's hard to work it loose once it's in there. The way I do it actually is put the filter through the ring first and then slide the intake tube through.
Your not "missing" anything, but it looks like you have the kit with out the filter side plastic velocity insert.

I run what you have and don't have any problems with the filter coming off.

Hmm...interesting. I thought that for the price, you would get a complete kit incuding the "velocity insert".

So if I'm not missing this part, is there a different kit for a seperate application?? or is it discountinued?

EDIT: Thanks for sharing the pics Terse...

So does that insert not play a roll in how sturdy and a good seal the filter will mount?

I think the 06 450r kit has no insert..... and I am not sure if they have changed their design for the yfz or not.... might have to ask them.

Ah, good call. I guess I never noticed it because I thought they all came with them.
Sure it would help to keep it sturdy, but I don't think it is necessary. It isn't there to help clamp the filter too, but to restrict the volume at that opening to speed up the air flow.

* I still run your version on my yfz's.
Thanks for your input guys.

I also started a thread on FCI's section over at YFZTech so once I find out what the deal is behind that insert, I'll keep this thread posted...
I have both versions of the FCI and the new one doesnt fit as good as the old one, the old one fits great the new tube on the new one is a PIA!!
The insert is for the older model yfz's. 04-05 use the insert and later models don't.

Actually the box this kit came in sates that it's for the '04-'05 models..
it should have an insert then. I know at the store i got mine from FCI set the inserts seperately.
because you have an '06+ Stix you shouldn't.

I believe it was explained as '04-'05 need more velocity and '06+ need more volume
