Do You Cut Your Plastics For A Kickstart?

8398 Views 41 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  07hooligan
I got a quick question I'm hoping someone can help me out with. I tried searching but it flooded with results.

I put my kickstart on last night and it hits the rear fender bolt where it attaches near the heel guard (above it).

Do I just bend the bracket that goes from my frame to the bottom of the fender or take that off and cut my plastic? ...or better yet, anyone have pics of what they did?

Thanks in advance!

I cut my plastic on my rear fender. I just made sure i gave it enough room for the heal of my boot when kicking .. I was gona make a new bracket for it but it really doesnt need it ..let me see if i can get a pic of mine for ya
whoa sidewinder, a little too much just for a kicker lever, lol, thats drag cut isn't it? I just ordered new plastics from Laker that are kicker cut rear, when they show up i'll post pics for ya, I don't exactly know what they are gonna lok like, lol

No, they're not drag cut as you can see here.

Here's a pic of the laker kicker cut, pretty similar to how I cut mine.
Good Lord Sidewinder, that would be great until I slip and get sucked under my own quad! ha ha

I thought about just bending the stock bracket, but didn't really have time to mess with it last night, so I'm not sure if that will even work.

As far as a less extreme cut, do you just trim some off the bottom of the fender and get rid of that bolt and bracket?
Trim off enough so you're comfortable with kicking it.
isnt there a different kicker lever to use? one thats a little shorter, i know some bikes dont have the rears cut and run kickers, i think gtilley's is like that? maybe he will jump in, or maybe im mistaken...
You are correct. I've got the shorter lever on mine but I didn't want to have to struggle kicking with just the heel of my foot like Grant does. Grant has special powers.

Damn right I do!! :mhihi:

I've got the '98 YZ250 lever on mine, and I didn't cut my fender. The lever I have WILL clear the fender but it's very close. You have to learn to kick it with the very back of your heal but after you get used to it, it's pretty easy to do. I went ahead and bent the bottom bracket back just a tad to get a little more room. But like I said, it's pretty easy to start once you get used to it. I can start my 13.5:1 motor sitting down. Here's some pics for you.

Thanks guys!

Grant before you bent that bracket did your lever JUST hit the bolt that holds your fender to the bracket (the one shown in your first pic)? That's how mine is now, so I'm hoping I can just bend it back a little so it's out of the way. I think I need to get rid of the stock heel guards to, but that's ok since they are indeed pretty lame.

..I should have some time to work on it tonight since apparently I lost the little dowel that goes from the oil line to the side of the case letting all of the fresh oil run out. :shocker:

BTW..are there any dowels that go in the case cover I pulled off to put this kicker on?? I have a bad feeling I either forgot something or put something extra on. Ahhhh, the learning process.

Nope, mine has always cleared. But it clears a little better since I bent the bracket.

That would be my bike that Sidewinder posted a pic of. The one with white Lakers. Just so you know, I have the kicker cut as well and though the lever does clear easily my foot does get hung up one the way down. I clear the plastic with my foot and then kick it till it starts. IMO the "kicker cut" isn't enough.
I thought the 98 YZ lever was the shorter one that cleared? Either mine isn't a 98YZ or I didnt' realize there was a shorter one. I bent my fender bracket but still hit the plastics a little, then my leg and heel get caught up on the bottom of the plastics.

Thanks for the diagram Sidewinder, I looked at mine when I got home and realized 2 dowels INSIDE the cover, and none in the outside line, doesn't add to the performance of my quad. I should have taken a pic of those 2 smashed together. Good stuff.
Then yours probably isn't the '98 YZ250 lever. I know for sure mine is, does yours look like my lever?
