Changing Coolant

3636 Views 18 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  2fast4uracingxc
Hi, I've got an 08 yfz 450 and I bought engine ice to change out my coolant. I got home and started investigating my ride. I noticed the radiator cap is up under the plastics, do I have to take the plastics off to do this or do I just unbolt the radiator and drop it out? Also I couldn't find a drain plug, do I just drain it out the hose that runs it to the motor? It isn't completely at the bottom of the radiator so I was wondering. I feel retarted for having to post this, but I don't want to do any unnecessary steps if there is an easier way. Please Help!

wonderin the same thing.

Yes you do have to take the front plastics off.

I would think you just take the water pump cover off and take the rad cap off to let air in to drain.
theres a little bolt. hold on, ill get a pic and an arrow. =P
always count on joester for pics lol
Yes you have to remove the plastics and yes there is a drain plug.

1. Remove side shroud plastics
2. Take off radiator cap
3. Remove drain plug

4. Flush out remaining coolant with water
5. Empty overflow bottle
6. Put plug back in
7. Fill up radiator and overflow bottle
8. Let bike idle, topping off coolant in radiator

I bet you looked at MY picture.

this thread is officially off topic. I NEED AN ADULT!
unlike most bantering on this site - you guys actually made me laugh today.

anyway, the way i did my engine ice was:

drain coolant
run white vinegar (?) and distilled water (half and half) for 5 minutes
drain
repeat
drain
repeat
drain
distilled water for 5 minutes
drain
engine ice for 10 minutes
check level of radiator and reservoir - top off if necessary

all that rinsing is to get rid of any remaining coolant on the motor and radiator. the vinegar get all the deposits out and the last step of just water gets all the vinegar out.
your not supposed to mix coolant and engine ice. so i made sure it didn't mix at all.

take the drain bolt out before you take the radiator cap off that way the coolant dont shoot out until your ready for it
