Big Bore Do's And Don'ts

So two years after terser created the what to watch for on athena big bore's. im just wondering if theres anything new worth looking at. I am in the market to buy a big bore kit for my 2004 that was rebuilt last year and has virtually no hours on it. I was sold on a ice cube 477 kit but i read a topic on here people were sayin they've seen a few die at the drag track. Im definitly not tryin to kill it by any means. I trail ride most of the time nothing to insane id say 60% of the time i ride it. the other 40% i drag race in NC nothing regulated just kinda drop of the hand type thing. Im lookin for more power. Im searching for a big bore kit and cams that would work good together. If im gonna get into the motor id like to do it all at one time. Right now my motor is stock w/ lightweight flywheel, FCI intake, and a dmc exhaust cut down to 10 inches. Im lookin to spend around 800 to 1000 on the kit and cams so money is an issue but if a lil more with get me something better i would probably make the effort in spending a lil more. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Later on im considering carb boring, port/polish job, and throwing in a wr crank or hot rod stroker not sure yet I will cross that bridge when i get to it.

Your big bore isnt gonna be able to do what it could do with out porting and carb work. cant just go big in one area kinda defeats the purpose i think. my opinion is start backwards of what your thinking. get port work and your carb bored and do the cam mod. Then after you get porting and carb work then go with the big bore. JMO
very understandable. how much would port/polishing job and carb bore cost me on top of the big bore kit? ne idea
Also what kind of bb are you running i see 501cc good lord

Carb boring alone costs about 125.00 or so depending on who does it. I had mine done by Sredrum over on yfztech which is definately the man to see for carb boring alone. Depending on who ports your head and if they are good are carb boring, its been stated that having a matching port and carb bore is slightly better vs mixing and matching. Porting costs honestly vary so much that it is hard to give you an exact number. I'd say roughly 275.00 - maybe 400.00 would give you a quality port job depending on how extensive of a port you want and of course if they use a flow bench or not. From what you've stated, you would want general "mx" or "recreational" port job for your style of riding.

I run a 470cc, 13:1, Web cams, ported, 42mm carb, FCI and a JSR exhaust btw. A great all around combo just flat out rips... imo
Probably can't afford to do it all at once, would it be wise to buy the big bore and cams and just wait till i can afford to get the port/polish, carb bore done all at the same time, or would port/polishing and carb boring help enough right now to do it install it and then big bore later?
Porting is normally going to run $375-$600 with a valve job. Don't get suckered into a port job unless a valve job is included in the price.

Paul at Woodward is running a special right now on a Cylinder works (gen 2) 98mm bore cylinder and Venom high comp piston with gaskets for around 1/2 of your budget, then with the other half of your budget you can have the head ported.

$0.02
or you can buy the 98mm big bore kit i have for sale.... pm for details
Look into the woodwards kit, and don't worry about cams yet... Just do the cam mod

I don't believe Woodward does engine work, he is a parts dealer.

Now for the mods it is up to you how, you go about it and what order. I wouldn't probably recommend the BB until you at least get the head ported. But you may get many different opinions.

I ran just a ported head for 1 year, then this year when I got the money I went with a BB and 42mm carb..

no woodward does not do motor work they just sell parts, comtact TTM racing his port job cost 250 and that includes a valve job
Get the head ported for the size bore you intend to run. Or wait until you go big bore
I know alot of people on this site will disagree with me but I have a Trinity 477 kit. I got them to p & p the head and I did the cam mod along with a Dyna FS ignition box. I love it. It runs great and (knock on wood) have had absolutly no problems. It runs ridiculously strong. I would really look in to it.
After seeing your dyno's I'm going to humble oppose the suggestion to get a Trinity port job

saaweet thanks for the info on ttm
has anyone else had ttm do a valve job for them?
I'd say spend your money on a good port/valve job.

When I added a +3 stroker crank to a stock motor, I really didn't get that much of a gain by itself. Went and had a mild port job done and, really started to wake up. Just this winter, I decided to go big or go home. Dropped the coin on a reputable race port job and, a few other mods.

I think without the porting, I'd be disappointed in this build.
Cams should be the last thing that you do...the stock cams in these bikes are a very good cam. The big bore should give you the most power for you money but matching it with a well ported head and bored carb will really make it come to life. I have a used ice cube 99mm cylinder i'm looking to sell with a 12.5 cp piston for $450 shipped. I have not had any problems with this setup and it only has a half a year on it. pm if interested.
