A Few Pics From The National This Weekend

3616 Views 25 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  stuff105
I was at the ATV MX national this weekend at Mill Creek MX in Pell City, Alabama. I didn't get to take as many pics as I wanted to though. I had a friend running Pro Am Production and one running Open B and 25+ so I was trying to help them keep their bikes dialed in, plus I hung out with Norris Quinn from Quinn Motorsports and helped him all I could. Pretty much all I did was remove, re-install, and help set up people's shocks. He did all the shock work. Anyway the pics.............

The Quinn Motorsports trailer

My rear shock getting serviced

One of my front shocks getting serviced

Norris taking my shock apart

I also got a few racing shots. Here's my buddy Don Ivester who finished 5th overall in Open B and 3rd overall in 25+

My buddy Ricky Deering #91 (who finished 12th overall in Pro Am Production) getting ready for the first moto

Weinen looked pretty good on KFX, but the KFX doesn't seem to like him. He had trouble both motos and didn't finish well at all. From what I've been hearing the Kawasaki guys have been having a lot of trouble. The way I hear it, to get enough power out of them to run up front they are having trouble getting them to hold together. The Yamaha guys looked OK, but nobody had anything for Wimmer. He dominated the race. But Thomas Brown really surprised me, he ran very well. Pat Brown got caught up in a pretty bad wreck on the start of the 2nd moto. He rode around with a broken subframe/pipe just dangling for the entire second moto. As far as I know, my buddies are running all of the nationals. They asked me to go to the rest of them, but I don't think I'll be able to. They're also trying to get Norris Quinn to go, but the way he talked he probably won't either.

No Andy, I didn't have time to put the swing arm off that bike I bought on mine. I was supposed to call Walsh back and talk to Nate at the end of last week about my new one, and I'd been so busy that I forgot to call.

I can't tell you that. When I asked Norris how much I owed him, he told me a REDICULOUSLY low amount. I said "WHAT?!?!? It's GOTTA be more than that." He said that I'd helped him out a LOT this weekend and said "So that's all you owe me."

I THINK he was charging like $120 for a set of fronts, and like $175 for all 3. I'm not 100% sure about that, but I THINK that's what he was charging. Just call him up and ask if you need something, tell him I sent you. He's been SUPER busy for the last couple weeks, so he might be really busy and in a hurry. He's had several Pro and Pro Am riders at his shop getting their bikes dialed in, and he had a couple more Pro and Pro Am guys at his trailer throughout the weekend working on their bikes. I know Jason Dunkleberger has been up there trying to get his new YFZ-R dialed in, and Norris said they'd got it working a lot better. He was looking forward to seeing what Dunk could do this weekend, but he had a BAD wreck last week at Norris's track and didn't get to race this weekend. He said the axle broke going into a whoop section and Dunk was going so fast when it happened that the quad cartwheeled all the way through the whoop section. He said that where the front wheel hit the ground, there was a perfect circle indented in the dirt about 4" deep and you could see the writing on the side of the tire in the dirt. :icon_eek: He said it demolished the frame on that bike too. Said it pushed the upper a arm mounts for that side all the way through to the other side of the frame when they broke off. :icon_eek:

Dunk is running Elka shocks on his YFZ-R. I'm pretty sure they're the Factory Series Elkas. Norris said they'd been trying different valving, spring rates, and crossovers and they finally had them working pretty well. Norris said he was kinda disappointed about Dunk getting hurt and not being able to race. He said "I'm telling you man, Dunk was HAULING! I think he might have had something for these guys this weekend."

I wish our local series was half as big as the NEATV. If our numbers aren't better this year, we won't have a series anymore. :icon_eek:
Nice pics Grant, thanks for sharing bro!

Those shots are pretty cool of the FOX getting rebuilt......by a Factory shock builder nonetheless...

I was following the races at another site and it seems as though the Kawi's weren't holding up to well other then Gibson's Walsh KFX.

Did you get to meet or talk to any Pro racers?

Norris isn't a Factory shock builder this year. There were some issues (that I don't know if he wants me posting in a public forum) that kept him from returning to the Can Am team.

Yeah, the Kawi's seemed to be dropping like flies.

I've met and talked to a few pros. Greg Gee came over to Norris's trailer for a while, Dunk came over right as we were all loading up to leave, Trent Kandel was there several times throughout the weekend too. I've also talked to Keith Little a few times, he's a hella cool guy. I've talked to Doug Gust, Jeremiah Jones, Pat Brown, Chad Weinen, Jeremy Lawson, and John Natalie for just a minute or so before.

On another note, I went to the Pro/Pro Am riders meeting sunday morning. My buddy that was running Pro Am Production said "You're my crew cheif, come on we gotta go to the riders meeting." The AMA official Harv Whipple made a point to mention that you couldn't bring any tools to the line to prep your gate (hinting at the Joe Byrd incident a couple years ago) and I was standing right beside Joe Byrd. So after the official said that, Josh Creamer spoke up and said "What about screws in your shoes, can we do that?" Whipple said "NO! No screws either." It was funny as hell, you could tell it bothered Byrd. :mhihi:
