Customers recently acquired quad with little history on it.
Full Lexx exhaust
Airbox lid removed
Ebay carb on it, OEM carb in box with it.
Oem carb has TPS bypass mod done to it
Ziptie mod
Cam mod

Unsure of any internal work done

Quad will start right up on choke. Will idle on choke/ half choke. Dies 4-5 seconds after choke turned off.
Current jetting

55 pilot
182 main
90 leak
NDSR needle on 5th setting down

250' above sea level
Currently in the area of 45° weather wise

I know my way around jetting, do alot of multi-carb street bike systems. This just seems over the top compared to what I see in the jetting posts on here. 60 pilot? I dont think ive seen anyone running a 60. Who actually stocks the next needle? Can't find a James Dean or GYTR needle everyone has suggested (just the needle, not a $100 kit). Maybe I'm blind (hahaha kind of am).

Like I said, current owner has no contact with previous owner to aquire info on what's been done internally here but with it clearly starving at the current jetting I'd imagine this thing is bored quite a bit.

Suggestions? Anyone have a JD/GYTR needle, in good shape, they could ship out?

JD blue or red? I got an extra blue one. You could always look for an NCVQ needle, a lot of people use that.

just realized i didnt identify the current needle in my post (NDSR) . updated it. The JD red was suggested to me from another local guy but ill go do some research on the differences between the two and get back to you.

That pilot and main jet seem a bit big if there isn’t any engine work done or BB kit.
Its a 5TA01 cylinder so unless they bored it, its a factory cylinder. Ive got some time to dedicate to it tomorrow so im going to back the jets down a bit and see if i can get it to run and work up from there. is the TPS delete common on stock setups? i get the purpose on a built race rig but not on what this quad appears to be

I’d say the tps delete is pretty common, it causes a lot of problems so easier to just get rid of it. I’d put like a 45 or 48 pilot and 165 or 170 main in it. Do you know if it has the cam mod done?

as in a new cam? couldnt tell ya. customer pick it up, rode it a little, and dropped it off saying it runs like sh!t. My plan was 48p, 165m, needle up 1 spot, leave the 90L and see what she does.

Alrighty, it would probably take you less than 10 minutes to find out, it’s pretty easy. But yea I’d do that 48 pilot with the 165, good place to start.

10 mins to pull tank and valve cover? the rest is 2 mins but if i remember correctly (havent touch yfz450 in years) tank has to come off to pull the valve cover, no? My saturday is wide open so ill probably do it. i want this thing out of the garage. ive got road bikes starting to come in for spring tune ups lol

Edit: on second thought, that is probably no more than a 20 min job lol

Yup sounds about right, tank plastic which is 2 Allen screws, 1 screw for tank, pull the fuel line, pull the spark plug boot, 2 Allen screws for valve cover and boom done. If it is cam modded should be 13 teeth between marks if memory serves correct.

Alrighty, did you try out the 48p and 165m?
As it sits currently
48 pilot
170 main
90 leak
NDSR Needle 5th clip
Fuel screw 2.25 turns out

think im going to try downsizing that leak jet because theres no reason for it to be double factory size but otherwise its running pretty solid now. Not sure why this guy jetted so high

Yea that was way too high for an engine without any work done. I had the 35 leak in mine before I got my power bowl, definitely ran good with that.
