Freeplay in steering '18 450r

Just bought an '18 450r after taking a break from quads for a bit. Only has 5 hours on it and basically new...I havent even ridden it yet. My problem is there's freeplay in my steering where the handlebars rotate a bit before turning the tires. I've searched and read all the post I can find on the topic here on the forums but cant figure out what my issue is. The handlebars, stem and bottom stem bolt all rotate together a little before contacting the steering flag and turning the tires. I've looked at a few pictures and am thinking maybe theres a piece of hardware I'm missing. It appears my steering flag sits directly on the frame and in some pictures I've seen of others bikes, it appears to be raised up off the frame. First picture shows an example of the flag raised off the frame and in the second picture my bike. Could this cause my freeplay? I tightened the stem bolt to 130 ft lbs and it didnt fix it. Tie rods aren't loose and turn tight with the flag once it begins to turn. The issue seems to be right where the stem goes through the flag. The piece I may be missing, I think, is #26, #25 in picture three. Any help is much appreciated.

Definitely looks like you're either missing a piece or at the very least they're put in the wrong order. I would take it apart, clean everything, make sure you have all the right parts and re-assemble in the correct order.

There was someone else with an 18 YFZ450R with the same issue. I remember seeing very similar pictures to yours.

If it were me, I would either go right back to the dealership (if under warranty), and if that wasn't an option, disassemble the stem and see what's missing in there.

Yeah, the first pic I showed was probably from that post. He had the same side to side freeplay that I have, but he also had vertical movement as well. It's out of warranry period and I live in Colorado and bought the bike in Ohio.

How far out of warranty is it? Is this a new problem that it developed OR you bought it stored it never ride it and just realized it?

Order the OEM parts that go there so when you take apart you have parts already. And keep the spares for some time in future. It will still be cheaper than a denied warranty deal.

My 18 yfz450r se has no play and the stem DOES NOT RUB ON FRAME.

@yfzgambler yeah that was the post that I took the pic from to show how mine looks different and the post I was referring to above. I agree, I'm ordering all the hardware for the stem for when I take apart. If it's still loose once I replace the parts, I guess it could only be the stem itself?

Go to a stealership and pretend you wana buy a new yfz and look down there and take a note how it has to end up and sit on the quad and steer back and forth to get a feel of how it has to feel and look how it is toed in to get a ballpark idea of how it has to end up. Tell the sales guy. "I gotta think about it".

If I was you since you gonna tear apart anyways I would upgrade and buy PEAK RACING'S greasable stem bushing. Get the latest greatest newest updated version. Do not 4get to order a new cotter pin or get one cheaper from home depot and order a new lock washer bear claw thing for the 2 bolts of the stem bushing or order 2 to keep a spare one for the 2 bolts. Use a torque adapter/torque wrench. And as always grease where it goes needs to get replenished.

I don't think Kilroy is selling the stem mounts yet. You can also re-use the cotter pin and lock tabs on the steering stem bushing quite a few times. You don't need to replace them every time, only once they get weak.


Definitely get lots of grease in the bushing up top though, it goes through it quick.
