Thumpertalk Decompression Plug

About The Product
If you're up to date with some of the problems the 2004 YFZ450 has had, then I'm sure you've heard the horror stories about the decompression plug. The problem is that this plug (mearly a little black piece of plastic) can be blown out under normal crankcase preasure, causing oil to spew out. This creates two problems; 1.) If you lose the plug, the ride you are on now is officially over, and 2.) Since the hole is located right above the head pipe, this creates a fire hazard. Remember some stories and pictures about YFZ's going up into flames? We suspect this was the sole reason.

So what can you do to prevent yourself from these hazards? Well, Thumpertalk.Com has come up with the perfect solution. They have created a solid billet plug with a notch on the end for the existing 10mm bolt to slide into as well as a seal on the other end. Since the 10mm bolt slides into the notch, it makes it impossible to be blown out while riding. The stock plug however wasn't held in by anything.

Installation
No instructions were provided with the product but you shouldn't need them since installation is very simple and straight-forward. First you want to take out the 10mm bolt that is on the side of the head near the plug. Then you simply take the old plug out. If you have difficulty taking the old one out, then just get a small screw driver and try to pry it out without damaging the head. We've heard people drilling a hole in the middle of the plug and then putting the screw driver in there to help pry it out. Which ever method works for you is fine. Then you take your new decompression plug and slide it in. Make sure that the seal is inside the head so it's not visible from the outside. If you have problems putting it in, you may want an extra person to push on the plug while you make sure the notch lines up for the 10mm bolt to slide into. We had a little bit of difficulty so we used a clamp to hold it in place. Word of caution here: When you screw the 10mm bolt into the notch, DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN IT! 5 ft lbs. is all it needs! The threads in the head are very soft and will strip! We have heard many stories of this area being stripped and we were one of the ones.

Other Facts
The Thumpertalk decompression plug is available in two colors; Blue anodized and billet aluminum.

Conclusion
For all you 2004 owners without this product, do yourself and your bike a favor and order this now! Do you want to have your ride come to an end because of a simple little plug like this? Didn't think so.
