Well wasn't impressed at all with goin from HMF optimizer to the MSD with shields settings, after 3 hrs of riding I switches to pre-set 3 and felt a good change in the throttle response, is there something i can do to improve it. I have shields on #8

It's funny, i always laughed at all these posts asking what tune to run, now i'm one of them... So, just got my msd a week ago, and now i have a huge hesitation as soon as i punch the throttle in any gear at basically any rpm below like 8k. I've read through this entire thread, I've tried running shields tune, sams tune, and almost all of the tunes in the first post. tried putting shields new top line in and still not helping. I've got the timing all at +5, and the two left side and 2 bottom columns at +3. I've tried dropping the fuel accel to 80% @ 3k rpms and that probably made it worse, tried everything in between on the fuel accel settings and i havn't been able to get rid of the hesitation. The bike didn't hesitate this much when i had trinity's fuel programmer on it, but it definately pulls harder with the msd (after hesitating of course). Also, i've got the Tip over switch glued in place, so thats not an issue either.
I'm at sea lvl, air box lid off, full trinity exhaust, and a k&n filter, also an 08 intake cam waiting to be installed.
Any ideas? I read somewhere that daddio posted that it could be the fuel injector is bad?
After messing with all kinds of settings for a day i'm really starting to miss my carb'd YFZ... Jetting was sooo much easier.

You might try taking the fuel decel to 5k. This might help the hesitation when your above 5k rpms and you are out of the throttle and you get back in it. Worth a shot.

Hello, i have a msd blaster at home waiting for installation but i have 2 doubts. I only ride mx and i like ride the quad at low and mid rpm, using the torque.
- What it is a good decel cutoff setup?5000rpm?
- And for fuel accel? 0 rpm,0 / 3000rpm,80 / 6000rpm,100 or 0rpm,0 / 10000rpm,100?

thanks

Dont know about that shilds settings wont work for every one neither will the 3 pre-sets which were crap for me after all his map is tuned to his set up, my set up is similar to his so his map was a good ball park for me and gave my 2011 a healthy kick in the butt but its not the holly grail. I had to richen up the bottom a bit as for the MSD it is worth it weight in gold I came from a kfx on to the yam also have a ltr so I am quite familiarly with injection set up but if you cant find the right setting you may just haft to bite the bullet and take it to the dyno

me I love the msd and a big thanx to shilds for sharing his map dynos are not cheap :)

So I am actually pretty suprised no one has mentioned this here yet so maybe I am way off my rocker...

I have been building a map with a LM-2 wideband reader. It is coming a long just the way I want it to at all different throttle positions. Time consuming, but min maxing if you find yourself at 70% throttle during the race once in awhile.

Anyways, comparing my map to all of the others on here I noticed that some maps are FAR different from others. My bike being an 09 at 4500' has required virtually no fuel added from 8k-10k rpm to run at 13.5 while others such as shields have tons of fuel added up there.

I am trying to figure out why there would be such a large difference between the maps and I keep coming back to the stock mapping being different. Since all msd values are a % added to the stock value.

In 09 the yfzr had a different fuel map than in 10 right? Did they change it again in 11? If this is the case, people swapping maps between different years of bikes could end up with tunes that hang them out to dry.

Any other thoughts on this?

Air/Fuel Mixture at Altitude for Bing carburetors, as fitted to BMW | Horizons Unlimited

The chart shows about a 3percent difference in fuel from sea level to 5000'. So depending on mods, air temp, and elevation, it's possible to be signifacantly different. Every engine is different

3% across the board would make a lot of sense, but 15% from 8-10k? While I am having more fuel on the bottom end? It just doesnt add up.

How different are the stock maps between the different years, does anyone know?

I'm curious to hear if there is a difference as well bc this the first I have heard of it. As far as fuel up top the most I have is 9%. I had mine dynoed and AFR for my elevation is dead on. I already was close just by comparing notes to the carbed yfzs with their % increase in jet size with same mods.

I am very interested in your theory behind the near non-existent fuel accel settings.

Did you only set it like that so that you would not get a bog off idle?

I am sure there are more important things to tune for

You should be able to copy Shields' map from within this thread... It should be a good starting point for you given your list of mods.

I finally got a chance to work with my msd blaster fi today. I have been reading through this thread for a while and decided to start out with the fuel and advance settings posted by "shields". I did take the fuel decel cutoff down to 5k and have the accel tab set at 80%@3000-100%@6000rpm as suggested by several others. I tried adding fuel to "shields" map but thought it didnt run as well at lower rpms (below 4000) I ended up with a +1 on all of shields settings above 4000 rpm, everything below 4000 rpm was left alone. This seems to be a great starting point for my yfzr. Thanks to everyone who posted information on this thread.

2009 yfz450r pro-design intake/K&N, lid removed, Yoshimura rs2 full exhaust, msd blaster fi. (Elevation@ 500' In MO.)
