The strainer on the pump in not servicable(thanks yamaha), we just actually pulled the plastic apart where it looks like it snaps together. Once you do this its now broke!!!. And tried blowing backwards through the strainer and it was plugged solid. We just put an outerwear on for the rest of our trip and he is ordering a new pump and strainer now. We found the problem by switching tanks from my quad to his and problem went away.

Yah Yamaha should have made the strainer serviceable! so now if your pump strainer is clogged the only solution is a new $250 fuel pump?? what color was your strainer because mine was black but if i squeezed it then it was a lighter color..the biggest problems i'm having with finding the problem is that the light panel doesn't throw any codes and that the problem is on and off. it'll run perfect for a week then all of a sudden the problem starts up again!!

i believe my fuel injector is sticking and staying open longer then it should cause it to burn excessively rich which explains the constant flame out my pipe and the flame burning out of my pipe after i have shut-off the motor. when it stars troubling again then if i turn the fuel pump on and off a couple times and take it for a ride giving all its got the problem is completely gone. any ideas backing up my hypothesis??

if i don't drive rough the quad runs good but as soon as i push the quad hard on a track(around 5 minutes of hard riding) the quad starts loosing power and i have no mid to top end power! to me it sounds like it could be either the fuel pump or injector...

here's an update to my current situation..i now can't ride my yfz450r at all now due to these symptoms. it starts right up but idles very rough and at a very low rpm for a couple seconds then shuts off. after a couple tries the quad will finally by itself ref higher to warm the engine up then revs down again like its suppose to but then idles very rough and back fires every once in awhile while idling then shuts off again. if i do try riding it i can't go any higher gear then second because if i open the throttle more it starts to shut-off. i know there's alot of intelligent people on this website so somebody must know something :)

Have you tried putting an original plug in it, not iridium. Or another R to swap known good parts from.

yah i tried to see what it would do with original plug and it does the same:( my friend just bought a R but hes an idiot cuz he thinks his quad will start doing the same thing if we swaps parts for a little bit :( I'm thinking its the injector so i ordered a new one and should be here in about a week. but i have my doubts if that will fix the problem...what do you guys think??

mine did this with a bad battery, the stator wouldnt put out enough power to charge the battery and give me spark at high rpms ,but i think your problem sounds like a lack of fuel.

i don't think its a lack of fuel since it idles very rough and backfires constantly while idling and when i checked my spark plug it was very black! to me it sounds like over-excessive fuel but i don't know whats causing it..thanks for your post though :)

no joke, i read your post and i said , man i really hope this doesnt happen to me! it did, today! but luckily i have a warranty still! im going to bring it in this weekend and see whats up with it.
it was really wierd tho, i started it and let it run for 2-3 mins and than i took off like usual and was wheeling down the street. then, out of nowhere it stalled so as i was rolling i started it again and it didnt like to rev at all and the only way i can ride it is to accelerate slow and ride at low rpms. i checked my plug and it was really black, so too rich, the thing is tho, i never added any fuel to my msd (all stock no baffle or lid). i changed the plug and it did the same thing! maybe need to put some negative numbers into the tables? ill give it a try! any luck yet yfz450junky?

when you take it in, be sure to remove your msd. Some dealers will not do warranty service if you have one. They constitute that as an engine modification and therefore voiding the warranty.

i have a feeling i may need to lean it out a bit, it is rather sooty and the plug turns black after a min of running. the thing was, it ran awesome until now, so i think it could be the cold weather. but wouldnt that lean it out more? i have two maps, one is the number 3 and i added a tiny bit of fuel to number 8 and it ran better originally , now it runs bad on both and even the stock map, may try putting baffle in along with my lid and removing the msd to see if that helps(to make it all stock again) that would at least tell me if my maps are off. right?
thanks for the advice dirtypixels and is it cold where you are junky?

i have no baffle and no lid, do you guys think there is any way i could be too rich with my msd no added fuel and only added timing? if so, where would i take fuel out at, i have all zeros in right now with a timing curve like in number three

check your cdi, stator and rectifier it could be your tors or tps is off as well. by pass the tors to see if it helps its the one on the carb with the two pins just connect them with a wire etc happened to my bros quad wouldnt run for crap and now it runs fine

Do the R/X's have TORS??? lol i think it is running rich, have to get another plug but there is a ton of soot which makes me think i have too much fuel, i have also been going thru plugs alot which also makes me think fuel is my problem, what are some syptoms of the tps being bad?
should have bought an 08, this FI stuff sucks!
(im sure it will be ok once i understand it, but until then ill hate it!)
