I have done some research on the cause of the phenom & this is what i have found.
95% of all newer sport quads out there have a single wall header pipe to reduce the amount of retained heat in the header.because of this we see a glowing red header when our bikes are just idleing or when we are just putting around the yard. most older sport quads used a twin wall header pipe which took alot more heat to make it glow & usually when we saw them glowing we knew there was a jetting issue. on most new sport quads and quads with aftermarket exaust pipes you shouldn't be alarmed to see your header pipe glowing hot enuff to light your granfather's stoggie off of. my suggestion is if you are nervous when you see this happen shut down your quad and pull your plug to check to see if your jetting is too lean. other then that you can just get your quad cruzing around 20-30 mph and you will see the pipe is no longer glowing. i hope this info calms the nerves of some people that have noticed this on there quads are have gotten scared to start them back up without taking them to the shop first. Be Safe & Have Fun Riding |

Great first post natas. It's rediculous the amount of threads on this site conserning the glowing head pipe. Hopefully this will be the last discussion on the topic.

thanks
it took me while after this had happened to me on a used 04 yfz450 i just bought had the same thing happen. i contacted yamaha and about 5 of the best yamaha shops i know of and they all confirmed this. the idea of the single wall header is to eliminate the retained heat by the header. thanks again and i hope this helps |

A moderator should sticky this at the top of each forum, delete all the other crap that came after the first post (well...... starting with stix) and LOCK IT.
It was a very good explaination, and could help eliminate the useless "glowing pipe" threads. |
