The reason people who race put heat sheild material on the bottom of the gas tank is to keep the fuel from heating up and building excess pressure in the tank. It also keeps the fuel from getting extremely hot to where it will affect performance of the motor during the summer, and fall series.. I have never had to do this on any of my Yamaha's but have had to in the past to the Honda's.
