thanks for quick response daddio. the only thing is mine was not leaking till i took apart and put back together. Did i pinch the o-ring or mess up the pin dowel or something? or maybe b/c it is warped i haven't put it back together exactly where it was when the warping occurred and there is a little leak there? Do you happen to now the torque specs from the bolt i speak of?

Default water pump leak

i have a yfz 450 and i bought the quad in july. the water pump would leak a little antifreeze outof the wheep hole and over time it started to get worse and worse till one day i couldnt drive 2 miles w/out it emptying all the antifreeze. so i bought a water pump gasket, seal, and o-ring kit by K&S racing. i took it all apart, put everything back together and i noticed the seals around the impellor shaft were facing out(springs were facing away from echother) and i have never seen a seal go in that way, so i put them in w/ the flat sides facing away from echother. with in 2 days it started pouring out of the wheep hole again. so i got some info off of this site, and i read that the springs on the seals have to face away from eacother. so im taking it apart right now, and i overnighted all the neccesary orings, seals, and gaskets from motosport. w/ some extras that are needed. thanks motosport! so yes when u do this by yourself make sure u get a new o-rings,gaskets and seals that your service manual states to get. and make sure the 2 seals on the shaft go the spring side out or the springs face away from echother. it will save alot of time and work.

So I know this is an older thread but I am in the middle of changing out seals and when I took them out the springs were facing each other. I noticed in the original post he said they should face out. Looking at the direction the shaft spins and the design of the seals I would think they should face towards each other like how they were when I took them out but does anyone have a definitive answer?

So far so good. Apparently I found out why mine was leaking. The last person to put the water pump in put the seals in backwards.

Two quick questions for this old sticky...
1-Do you use any gasket sealant or anything on the new gasket?
2-Is it easier to remove the impeller with the side case on or off and if off, do you hold the back of the shaft with a wrench or vise etc. to do it?

Could someone explain exactly how the seals lay in the case? I tore mine apart two days ago and broke the nozzle that sprays oil to the gears i think its what it does anyways. My brain needs refreshing, esp since you guys have had leaking problems after putting back together. Also Im going to replace all my coolant, and i bought water wetter. Whats the best way to run that stuff? Thanks for all the help..

Flat side goes to the middle, springs are on the outside.
