Several months ago I read about a couple of people taking out the oil screen (the one coming out of the bottom of the oil tank in front of the motor) and finding aluminum and paint chips on it.

I can also attest to this as I too found paint and aluminum chips on my oil screen upon removal.

Probably just left overs fron the machining process at the factory, but still enough to inhibit some oil flow.

I highly recommend that ALL YFZ owners pull off the bottom oil line (after draining the oil of course) and clean the screen. My oil flow wasn't greatly affected, but I want 100% oil flow going to my motor.

Just a heads up from a fellow YFZ owner.

At the bottom of the oil tank there is an oil line coming out of the tank that goes to the bottom of the motor.

Disconnect the line from the bottom of the tank and you will see the screen.

There's a screen inside the motor too. I found it when we split my cases the other night to put the WR kit in. It was surprisingly clean.

Glad to hear your guys efforts didn't go unrewarded.
Now, what I am really curious about is if I will find more later on??!!

I can (almost understand) finding them from the first go around, but I would hope there will be no more shavings to find! :

guys make sure that it is metal for sure that you are seeing on the srceen. I just tore my friends 04 down because of alot of oil comming out the vent tube. Thought it might be a broken ring. But nehow when I took his line out and cheched it I thought the same metal shavings and w00ter but once I tore the motor down I realized that the timming chain guide had been chewed up and that was what was plugging the sceen chuncks of black plastic looks like metal though so make sure you take a close look at it. Just a heads up

did anyone verify this with a magnet or just happen to cut there self on metal?

Anyone that does this and takes good pictures and explains the steps of taking it apart, cleaning the filterand so on I'll give them plenty of credit and pin it in the maintenance section.

I checked mine with a magnet and they were found to be nonmagnetic. i was told it was aluminum particles from the casting were the timing chain rubs.

Good idea having it pined in the maintenance section .

Hmm,,, lets see who would be a good candidate
I'm thinking this YFZ450alterego feller ,,, don't he have a really good camera

I checked mine again because I had to change the water pump seals yesterday and guess what.....nothing.

Of course it was only 1 1/2 rides (8 hrs) on it after I did it the first time.

I admit, thats not much time, but still, it is good to know that you didn't find any new stuff in there after the original cleaning!

I will re-check mine again after a few months.
