So I just purchased a 2010 yfz 450r from a guy in Texas (I live in NM). Bike was/is clean clean. The guy told me he only rode it maybe 8 hrs when he bought it then pretty much let it sit. When I received the bike, it wouldn't start. Bummer! The motor would turn over buy I couldn't hear the fuel pump priming. So I call the guy & he tells me that it's a low/bad battery. So he calls my local NAPA store & even purchases the battery for me. He's been a really cool, honest guy the whole time.. So I install the battery, fuel pump primed & it fires up! Ok so me & my buddy go riding the next day. Well about an hour into the ride, the bike dies & we can't get it to start again. Same exact issue! Everything is turning over but the fuel pump isnt priming! So we mess with it for a half hour or so, checking connections, trying to bypass the fuel programmer, etc. Nothing. So my buddy rides to go get a toe rope. Comes back, I coast it down the hill it was on, then just for the heck of it, I try the key again. Fuel pump primes & it starts!! Bike was fine for the next 3 hrs of riding.. ???? Anyone have any ideas what might of happened? Is it something that's going to happen again? One of my buddies mentioned something about the elevation changes & maybe the computer needed to adjust & re-set itself.. Please help!!!

I believe that is what is called and electrical gremlin. I have never heard of a bike needing an elevation change and re-adjusting itself, but maybe it is possible. Weird....sounds like a bad connection to me.

Haha! I know right?! It's just weird how it was fine the rest of the day.. I read somewhere (issues were similar but not exact) about the rollover killswitch located beneath the battery box?? But I didn't roll it, nor was I doing any riding that would maybe confuse it into thinking I did. Just riding down an arroyo..

I would pull all the plastics and CLOSELY inspect every connection. If you find a bad one, seal it.

Ok thanks I will try that. Do you think that was the issue to begin with? Just strange how once I replaced the battery everything was ok for awhile.. That's the only thing that has me really confused. Guess just coincidence maybe??

I dont have a R but the things I would check the charging system and make sure its charging then check the fuel pump relay and when its not startinging are you turning the key off and waiting a few seconds and turning the key back on.

I really don't know. I don't have much experience with EFI engines. Maybe something keeps killing your battery?

I had the same issue with my Yfz450X. It was happening at totally random when it would happen. It seamed like if there was less than 12.4 VDC at the fuel pump it would not come on. I bought a sharai battery battery with higher CCA for a quicker start for HS dead starts and it never happen again.
