Not sure if this is normal or not (havent had the bike long, starts up and sounds good until warm, then sounds like its knocking or ticking or something (metal-y noise), I've uploaded a video hopefully you can get a good sense of the noise through it, only really heard at idle, bike has full power and no smoke etc..

These motors do make a little knocking sound, which is normal, but from the video, yours sounds a little more than most.
If you want to narrow it down, listen to the head with a stethoscope, and you can narrow it down between the head and the piston.

so valves are out of the question? It is a bit hard starting but the bike has pretty low hours, it sounds normal for about 5minutes until it is warm and i wrap it up, and then when it comes back down to idle it makes that noise.. heres another video... this is entirely warmed up..and the nosie is pretty presentable especially after i rev it and let it fall back down..

Yeah, that is definitely not normal. I would start with the valves then the piston like mentioned above.

thats weird the thing has full power, and that noise really isnt present unless its just sitting ideling, sounds and performs normal, this might be weird but would lower octane fuel make it do that at all? I know these require atleast 91, and i have no idea what is in it, just bought it not too long ago

That is not the kind of engine knock that comes from low octane fuel. I would bet that you have a cracked piston skirt, if I had to guess. That sounds a lot like piston slap to me. Let's hope it is something minor, but I can't think of any knocking that is "minor"

My sons 08 Sounds just like that from new and still doses like in first video. My son has been running it for 2 years and racing it all last year. I,ve checked valves all in specs everything always looked good just have same noise at idle. The second video sounds worse and I don't have the noise after warmed up and reving it at idle it's still there. I'm doing a rebuild right now and nothing seems to look bad after 2 years, just normal wear. hope this helps but check everything just to be safe!

i know this post is old but it was at the top of the list when i searched "knocking noise".. i got the exact same noise and its been there for quite a while. i only have bout 100 hrs or so on my motor but it hasnt always done it. i figured id have to replace some valve shims but when i checked.. they were all within spec. i did a lil carb cleaning and everything is working great except i still have that same exact knock. its good to know someone else has had it and it has been running same as new with it. i checked the oil also and there isnt a hint of metallic sheen or any shavings or anything.. aside from normal brassy colored clutch material.

Mine started doing this a while back its an 06 I was stumped couldnt find out what caused it and no one could tell me one day I threw caution to the wind and changed the water pump seals and shaft and the noise stopped then I created more confusion as to why the noise was there but after about 20 hours still no noise

I don't know what that noise is but it is not correct. Yfz450 engines are extremely noisy but not that noisy. If it was mine I would be tearing into it to find and rectify. Locate either top end or bottom - sounds like top end (possible piston skirt issue) by just listening to the video. Use a stethescope as mentioned and good luck hunting.

mine has been doing this noise since day one ive been told by some local riders its normal for these engines. As ive said since I first really noticed the noise, just gonna wait for it to go boom and im sure ill find a problem somewhere, and my bike gets riden fairly hard too and theres no power loss/issues. everything is within spec valvetrain wise i almost just wanna replace the timing chain tensioner for shits and giggles. But why fix something that aint broke?
