Default Clutch replacement "tutorial"

Hey guys i changed my clutch today, and i took a few pictures. maybe it will help anyone going into the job know what they are going to be dealing with. its really pretty simple, but i figured a picture's worth a thousand words, right?

anyways, the things you need for a clutch change are as follows:

-socket wrench
-8mm socket
-10mm socket
-12mm socket
-various hand tools like pliers etc. my dental pick came in handy for this job as well.

first lets learn the parts of a clutch so that i can use these words and you will know what im talking about

underneath the pressure plate and clutch plates we have this

first drain the oil, or tip the quad on the side, either works, but i recommend draining the oil because your YFZ needs an oil change, dont try'n' act like it doesn't.

loosen the 7 8mm clutch cover bolts in a criss cross pattern and slide the clutch cover off. you can do this with the brake lever and everything still on, at least i could on mine.
then you will see this

loosen the 6 10mm bolts in the middle all the way. there will be a bolt with a washer on it and a spring for each one. once those 6 bolts are out, the pressure plate is completely free. I couldnt get mine out with my oily hands, so i grabbed a pair of needlenose pliers and grabbed it somewhere safe and pulled it off with those.

now you will see this

simply take the old clutch plates out and put in the new ones. MAKE SURE TO SOAK THE NEW ONES IN OIL FOR AL LEAST 12 HOURS BEFORE YOU INSTALL THEM!

here are some measurement specs

friction plate thickness ----------- 2.9-3.1mm LIMIT 2.8mm -------------- all of mine were pretty much exactly 3mm
friction plate warpage-------------- .2mm ------------------------------------- didn't measure my warpage
clutch spring free length---------- 51.8mm LIMIT 50mm ------------------- all of my clutch soring were too short ranging from 46.5mm to 48.5mm

here are some torque specs

pressure plate/spring bolts (6 of them) ------ 5.8ft*lb or 69.6in*lb
clutch cover bolts (7 8mm bolts) -------------- 7.2ft*lb or 86.4in*lb

if you want to go further into the clutch and remove the clutch basket and inner clutch hub, all you need to do is unbend the metal tab holding the big center nut on and take the nut off. it is a 30mm if i remember right. you are supposed to retighten it to 54ft*lbs, but i removed and replaced mine with an impact wrench with no problems so far.

hope that helps some people!

oh and heres my old OEM springs vs my new EBC springs. clutch is bit stiffer now but its worth it if it wont slip anymore!

Don't forget that when you put the steel plates back in that one goes inbetween each fiber and they have to face the right way. The steel plates have a sharp edge and a smooth edge, the sharp edge goes outwards. Other than that nice write up. You don't have to drain the oil either, I just replaced mine on the dyno and had no problems.

thanks for the comments and info, guys. I just started her up for the first time after the change and its much better. also, when i shift from neutral to first, the chain no longer jumps as much as it used to, which is nice.

I bought my bike with racing clutch an it won't let me slip it in gear; I have to dump it so it want kill. Is there some spring I can install to make it more trail ride worthy? I'm scared to ride my godchild on it cuz I have to dump the clutch.
