So ive really got the mx bug and am about to drop money into the bike for suspension etc. Would I be better off and sell my 07 and buy an 09+ model and mod it from there? Just dont want to drop 3,000 in suspension on the 07 and wished I did it on a newer model instead.
Agreed, the efi bikes are much more comfortable, and very impressive on the track in stock form. Something that cannot be said about the carb bike, in stock form that is. Built, they're both about equal except for the comfort level. Fix the efi head, and get that early hit in the power band that so many of us crave. With that being said, one downfall of the efi is the fact that it does cost more money to build due to the fact that you have to buy a programmer, and if you want to run with the built carb bikes, you must get an epoxy port. Still worth it imo.
In reality, for the beginner mx rider, suspension is everything not power.
I started this thread and was glad I sold my 07 and bought a '10. I raced for one season with stock suspension and only tires, yosh pipe and a PCV. It did the job 3x better than my 07 on the track. I did a precision clamp and pro stabilizer half way through the season. Now I just upgraded the front suspension to houser LT with elka stage 5. I can ride almost twice as long before on the track and am realizing the limitations of the rear shock now.
The R's jump great and corner better. But power, it doesn't have. It's a dog in the dunes and will not win a drag race. BUT, for what I was looking for it's great. Money well spent going to the R. The consistent reliability of the fuel injection is amazing. Getting on a carb bike is just annoying now if it's not tuned perfectly.
Motor work will be in the future, but really I need to work on my riding. Power is for the experts and the dunes.
I think get the carbed one. It is lighter, easier to work on tuning wise. A broader range of parts that people already have installed/used so you can get a better idea of what you are looking for in suspension etc etc. Hell maybe even the parts are cheaper too. I heard it is easier to get the power out of the carbed bikes then the EFI ones as well, but then again I guess its all personal preference.
A lot more parts are popping up for sale for the efi since they been out a while now. I love my efi, especially now with the Vortex instead of the msd. Very easy to add or take away fuel of needed and only need a flat head screwdriver to adjust.
Definitely go for the r without a question it is a better bike. I race the pro am class with stock suspension. The stock suspension when tuned right is not far off from top dollar suspension. Once you strip off all the unnecessary stuff off they are only a few pounds heavier then a mx ready carbed bike. Plus you can't beat the ergonomics of the r chassis. My only complaint when I got my r was the power but a little head work took care of that.
As most seem to say, I'd go with the R as well. I've raced every model there is basically and the R is superior to the carbed models for MX. One of the big reasons is the power delivery. Yes it's a bit weak stock, but can easily be made pretty nice with some head work and a tuner. But it doesn't wear you out like the carbed models on the track and just pulls vs spinning out everywhere.
Power isn't everything. My race quad earlier this year (non Yamaha) was dyno'd at 62hp and is insanely powerful. Yet two consecutive races I got beat out of the gate by a YFZR with portwork, cams, exhaust, and tuner. Not a built race engine. It hooked up and went. Granted that individual happens to be long time pro Kory Ellis, but still proves my point.
I'm pulling faster lap times on a lightly modded YFZR than fully decked out national quads I have. The ergos and power delivery mean A LOT!
I have an 2004 yfz and am in the same boat bit by THE MX rebuilt, oil mod, cam mod yoshi rs2 jetted I have mastered the carb cant see why I would want a fuelie are they that much better before I dump 3k in full fox set up + extended arms etc.?
I ended up going with the R. For MX it is the way to go instead of building up the older carb model. No questions asked. But, once a carb model is built up, it's good to go. Just cheaper to start with a R, or buy a carb model already built for mx.
I've swapped from a motocross built Banshee to a 14 YFZ450R. Love the R!
