My brand new R has less than five hours and it gets stuck on downshifting. The lever just stays down, and the trany goes into neutral alot. Sometimes it doesnt feel right or the gear isnt in all the way. it's weird. Hoping it just goes away.[/b]
i havent had that problem, i would take it to the dealer and get that looked at. mine seems to like sticking in the 3-4 upshift under WOT conditions. even clutching and getting out of the throttle it still can be diffacult. im going to do an oil and filter change on it to see if it corrects the issue. if not ill be taking it to the dealer this week

I was wondering if you got your shifting problem worked out? Mine is doing the same thing. The quad has been in the shop for about four combined months now,and Yamaha's customer service rep thinks it is funny.I am not knocking yamaha but this quad is realy turning me off to them.I currently have an 09 r1,08raider,09yfz450r,04fz6 and they just do not want to do any satisfaction here. One of the parts were on backorder with no shipping date and it took several hours of phone calls to get them to find me the part.I mean come on now I am making payments and cant even ride the thing.I am waiting for its return and if it still is not right, its time for legal action.

What do you think legal action will get you? If the part is on back order, its on back order. Yamaha's obligation is warranty the machine for 6 month (perhaps longer with extended warranties). As long as Yamaha is working on the issues, where is there grounds for legal battles?

Everyone is SO quick to jump on the "sue" card. Have you stopped to think what the possible outcome will be if you even indictate anything concerning "legal" issues? If it was me, I'd roll your quad to the curb and, tell you to talk to my lawyer. Now, your in and out of court for months.

I've been in retail long enough to know that you can't make everyone happy NO matter what you do. Once someone threatens lawyer and/or law suits; I am done talking.

I mean legal action such as lemon law. They have had there fair chance to fix it.I deserve a quad I can ride,That is what I spent my 8000.00 for.I do not want a pile of parts. You could role my quad to the curb than you would lose the average of three new yamahas I buy every year.I feel I should be compensated for down time,if this were a car they would have to give me a rental. They actualy got there but moving and got me the part after dealing with them for 5 hours on the phone. They ripped it out of a new unit.I said if you read the post that if it is not corrected this time with the new parts I want a new motor they laughed,I think it is fair.

The problem had nothing to do with the oil,It was a manufacturing problem. The quad spent four months in the shop.I finaly got so fed up I took the machine home and fixed it myself. It took me two hours and no parts to fix it.The shop tried replacing the whole transmission,Yamaha had no idea what the problem was. They offered me nothing while they had my machine for the four months. This is the last new Yamaha I will buy.I am talking about yamaha motor company too not my local shop.I just wanted to let all the people who put down hsbc financing they were the only ones willing to step up to the plate and help me.

Are we talkig about only 2009 YFZ's or are we talking about all YFZ's in general?
Mine seems to stick a little now and then but I've only had it for about 2 weeks and ridden about 5-6 hours on it so far.. I'll have to see the next time I take it out. Maybe what I'm feeling when shifting into first and down from like 3rd is just because I'm breaking it in.. Thanks!

That's most likely a problem with your shifting technique. It's called "missing a gear". This topic is referring to a manufacturing defect in some of the first models back in 2003.

Has anyone else had this problem with their YFZR? I have about 5-7 hours on my new '09 R and the shifter is sticking down when I downshift from second to first.

Any ideas of what might cause this? Should I try to change the oil first or just take it to the Yamaha dealer and let them look at it?

Thanks!
-Jordan

my 09 also sticks when downshifting.
if you try to downshift more than one gear at a time, say comming from a long straight to a corner 5 down to 3, it sticks in 4th, until you let off the clutch, you can hear it snap back.
when I took it in for that, they had it a week and changed the shifter lever. didnt fix the problem but I got pissed because the repair shop didnt even look at it until I went there and stood there looking at them stupid until they pulled it out of the corner and did the oil change and gave me the shifter to put on, they wouldnt even do it. fockers.
I was told it is a problem with a detent plate inside the trans getting bent or dented causing this. but they still wont fix it, I learned to ride it this way, kind of annoying but ride-able.

To anyone with a problem shifting from 1st into 2nd, remember that between those gears is neutral. I found that u jus have to make sure u really give it some push and it will go every time. I still miss it from time to time when i don't think about it and treat it like all the other gears.
