i know theres several threads out there saying to run premium. my dad told me that in town the premium does not get used very much so it is probably old. should i still use premium running the chance of it being older gas? my dad wants to use regular in the mowers and his honda rancher but im worried about running regular.

You realy should use premium but if its a quality issue and you dont get detonation from the regular it will be fine.

Your dad has a good point, as old as the premium is I would venture to guess that the octane rating is actually lower than the regular you have there. In my honest opinion, especially at your altitude, you should be just fine on fresh regular unleaded.

I don't notice the difference on any of our utilities or small bore sport bikes but on the 450s it makes a world of difference trust me

I would take slightly suspect premium fuel over 87 with ethanol in it... I wouldn't even dream of putting 87 in my sled.

I did some searching trying to find hard research on gasoline's octane rating loss over time. Most people seem to "claim" that gasoline loses an average of 2 points per 30 days it is stored.
So if your 91 octane has been stored at the station for 2 months, it has the same octane rating as the fresh 87, however the additives have separated in the 91. I dont know how small your town is, but we have neighboring town gas stations that only fill their premium tank once every 3 months. I always get my gas next to the interstate just for that same reason. If you can find a station along the interstate it is probably all fresh.

Ask them, I am sure they can tell you.
