Default should i buy an 04 yfz450 used?

I looked at a 2004 yfz 450 yesterday and it had a few issues. the owner said it was built by abba racing for him when he was 14 and that he has never raced it or anything and doesn't know anything about working on it or maintenance, he said it has been sitting for a year.

so it looks good but it won't start without being jumped, the owner says its the battery but once started it won't stay running for long, it kept stalling out when riding it. so i asked him if i could pull apart the carb and clean it before i buy it to see if it fixes the problem, but he really didn't want me to.

also it has a stage 2 clutch that grabbed way late when shifting into second, you had to pull up higher then any gear.

the filters were filthy.

the quad is beautiful and the right price, and it has a lot of extras but i don't want to buy something that can't be easily fixed.

posting for my husband...

There's nothing wrong with going with one with aftermarket parts. Saves you a ton of money down the line. I like to find 07+ yfzs to deal with the oiling issues, but older models with the oiling mods are perfectly fine. Never buy one that runs sloppy or won't stay running. It just shows a sign of neglect on maintanence, as does dirty filters and dirty oil. Check bearings by picking up the front end and rear end. These are things that good owners keep up with. Check the chain and sprocket wear. Just a few basics. Alot of quads out there look to good to be true. Some spray paint and some new plastics can really hide a terrible quad! Trust me I've been bitten before when I was younger.

Hello Candy, The problems you posted could be multiple things and if your husband doesn't like wrenching on ATV's it could be a bad financial purchase.

I take it that "wrenching" means working on it. yes my husband does all of the work on our quads and is good at trouble shooting and fixing the issue.

I checked the frame and it looked good. i was told that any frame work means its been wrecked.

Check the chain and sprocket wear looked good from what i could tell, i didn't know to check the bearings, what does that tell you?

supposedly he keeps up on all maintenance by sending it to the shop every time. it blows me away that someone could be riding for 8 years and not know how to work on quads what so ever, then he tells me that his family asks him to work on their quads and he will do it but hates it. he is going to replace the battery and clean the filters today and we might look at it again. my husband is discouraged and now leaning for a 660 raptor, since i am getting a 686 raptor he is jealous and wants something faster then mine lol...

he is asking $2500 for the quad
