Default Not quite a YFZ but I thought people might enjoy

I don't even know if many of you remember me because I haven't been on this site much in the last 2-3 years. But I used to be on here all the time back in the good ole days. For those who don't remember me, here's a link to the last time I rebuilt my YFZ...and ended up winning QOTM for the second time with this quad.
http://http://www.yfzcentral.com/for...y-rebuild.html

Also, here's a link to more pics of that quad.
http://http://s224.photobucket.com/a...bruary%202008/

Anyway, I traded that quad for a Walsh YZ450F hybrid that I then tore into and did a complete rebuild on. I had another site member, dear friend and former Admin Misstify design my graphics for me and she suggested that I post pics of the finished quad here. So here you go.

And if anybody is interested....here's the link to the whole album of the rebuild I did on this quad. http://http://s224.photobucket.com/a...cpZZ1QQtppZZ16

nickmell- The intake is made by Walsh Racecraft. Let me try the links again since they didn't work.

Walsh YZ rebuild 2011 pictures by gtilley45 - Photobucket

polaris650freak- The airbox is from a TRX250R. It's basically an all aftermarket 250R that was made for the YZ engine. Plastic, hood, seat, gas tank, airbox, axle, hubs, carrier, antifade.....all TRX250R stuff. Frame, subframe, a arms, tie rods, swing arm, steering stem, bar clamp, radiator, radiator shrouds, radiator tank and intake tube are all made by Walsh to be used with the YZ450F engine. Also, here's a pic where you can see 3 unique features that a Walsh hybrid has. The radiator fill tank, adjustable shock towers, and quick detatch front plastic.

The radiator fill tank, it's just easier to get to. The adjustable shock towers let you adjust ride height without messing with the shocks, even though this isn't the best way to do it. But it really lets you fine tune your set up. The quick detatch front plastic is my favorite feature. I can flip the seat up, undo a velcro strap, unhook the 2 rubber grommets that hold the rear of the front plastic and the front plastic slides right off. The Walsh hybrids have a piece that attatches to the plastic and it has 2 little pegs that slide into 2 holes in the front of the frame so installing or removing the plastic is quick and easy. I can literally go from this.....

to this.........................

in about 30 seconds or less with ZERO tools.

What purpose does that can sitting on top of the head pipe serve?

Sick! Just curious, why not a TRX motor?

Yamarider 154- That's the resonator. The way it's been explained to me...basically, it's a way for the pipe to still make power when the sound is such a big issue. For the pro class at the nationals, the sound limit is 98 decibels. It's hard to get a high horsepower set up that quiet so they have to do more to the actually silencer or muffler (some end caps have smaller holes) and it restricts the exhaust. So since the end of the exhaust is so restrictive, it kills the power right off idle and almost kinda makes a dead spot when you hit the throttle. So the can on the header gives that first little burst of exhaust when you hit the throttle somewhere to go...to counteract the restrictive silencer. This exhaust is one of Pat Brown's exhausts from his YFZ days. I saw him about a month ago and he was looking at it and told me that this was definitely one of his old ones and said "Oh man, you got one of the good ones....you can't buy these!!" I know it's one of the quietest pipes I've ever heard. It's not much louder than a stock exhaust.

blown54- Thanks man! No TRX motor for several reasons.
1) The dirtbike motors make way more power than quad motors.
2) I like Yamaha's.
3) When this quad was built, the TRX450R (or YFZ, YFZ-R, LT-R, KFX, KTM, DS or any of the current production quads) hadn't been built yet. This quad was originally built before the production quads and production rules back when everyone was racing hybrids. The frame is a 2000 model and originally had a 426 motor in it. Walsh Racecraft built this bike for former pro rider Dave Diver (watch Huevos 3 if you don't know who that is) and Walsh later converted it over to the '03 YZ450F 4 speed motor that's in it now.

I'm not opposed to the Honda motors though, they make an ass load of power! I had a LSR CRF a couple years ago and those CRF motors will haul balls even when they're stock! I was actually looking at a Laeger CRF hybrid when I found this quad. But I was pretty much the last guy around here to have a YFZ when everybody else started going to TRX450Rs and LT-Rs.....so I was kinda known as a Yamaha guy. I'd been wanting another hybrid and I thought it'd be cool to have a YZ hybrid with the GYTR pipe because I'd never seen one before. This quad is exactly what I'd had in my head as far as the hybrid I wanted other than the fact that Fox wouldn't make me a rear shock and I had to go with a Custom Axis instead.

Brian- So far I love it, but I don't have much time on it yet. I went to a race saturday, so I got 2 practice sessions and 2 motos...so I've got 20 laps on the shock. I wanted a Fox rear, partly because I like to have matching shocks, and because I had a Fox rear on my YFZ and I loved it. But Fox isn't making 250R shocks and may not ever. One of my friends is a huge Fox dealer and he's part of a deal to start making race ready, Laeger like CRF hybrids that are gonna come with Fox shocks on them and we thought he was gonna be able to get me a Fox rear. But they keep running into problems so there hasn't been much progress on that. He was even gonna build me a Fox rear piece by piece but they won't make the clevis that the CR500 linkage style hybrid shocks use. So I ended up having to go with a Custom Axis instead. But from what I understand about the PRS, and as good as Custom Axis has always been...I'm not too upset about having this shock.

Bobby- I've had people tell me they couldn't believe this bike didn't have any chrome other than the axle because they remembered my YFZ. And I miss the good old days of this forum!!

YFZ450 83- Those are actually Goldspeed tires and I love them so far. They are very soft and I was a little worried that they'd be the "run them 1 or 2 weekends and throw them away" kind of tires, but they're actually holding up pretty well so far.

Looks like it would handle great! I'd really like to ride a hybrid and see what all the buzz is about. The old yfz you built looked great also!

Thanks for all the compliments!

bbcmudtruck- You're right, it does handle great. It's probably the best handling quad I've ever been on. That's the main part of the hybrid buzz. Most of them are TRX250R chassis based geometry, and in my opinion there still hasn't been anything built that handles as well as a 250R. Plus a lot of Laeger and Walsh hybrids use a CR500 style linkage for the rear end which is an amazing set up. Thanks for the compliments on the YFZ too. I sure do miss that bike. But I guess the guy that I traded it to for this quad was happy with it. I saw where he had it listed on Ebay as a "mint condition show quad" and sold it for $4,850. It made me sick to my stomach to see my baby sold that cheap, but it was his. I guess he was free to do whatever he wanted with it.

Mary- I know I've thanked you over and over for all your work on the graphics and you're probably sick of hearing it. But I want to give you a very big and public THANK YOU SO MUCH for all your work on the graphics. I know how busy you've been and how much you've had on your plate lately and there were times when I felt bad for asking you to do this. But I couldn't be happier with the finished product and that's completely thanks to your design work. The graphics are exactly the vision I had in my head and I think they tie the whole quad together and give it that finishing touch. So again, thank you....I owe you one.

I find myself coming back to the thread to look at the quad. lol I'm really digging it. A buddy of mine just powdered a Walsh frame and I wondered how that subframe worked.

Yeah, she said several people in her family saw it and was asking her if that was her quad.

blown54- Thanks man. The subframe is pretty cool. It makes it a LOT easier to kick start because you don't have to worry about hitting the fenders when you kick it. Plus, it's cool all the looks I get when I roll it out of the trailer with the seat up. Or when I ride it down to staging with the seat up. I always see people pointing with that "what the...." look on their face.
