Hi everybody! I have been reading on the site for quite awhile now and thank you to everybody for all the good info on here!!!
I recently picked up a 2006 YFZ450 on eBay for $1200 with a seized motor. It seems to be basically stock with the exception of a kicker kit installed on it. I am in the Army Reserve and currently deployed overseas. Before I deployed I sold my ’06 Polaris Predator 500 because it was getting harder and harder to find replacement parts for it when something broke. Anyways, since I’m deployed I figure I’m going to treat myself and build a basically fully tricked out XC quad so that when I get home I will have all the parts already waiting for me and can build it from stock to modified in a few days and then jump right back into racing as soon as I can! Alright, now for the meat and potatoes of the thread…the build plans!!! Since the engine is seized, it’s going to get: Wiseco ’04 WR450F crankshaft and kit CP ’04 WR450 piston/ring kit with 12.5:1 New Cylinder Works cylinder Send my right side engine cover in for the ’07 oil mod/pump to be done ACC Pump spring mod Cam mod And for the rest of the bike: Rekluse Z-Start Pro Clutch Rekluse Clutch cover Acerbis oversize fuel tank PowerMadd hand guards w/ hand wraps Pro Armor Kill Switch Rath Racing nerf bars w/netted heel guards ASV f3 brake lever ASV F3 Pro model clutch DWT Ultimate rock-N-lock fronts DWT G2 dual rear bead locks w/ plugs Maxxis Razr XC tires Rath Racing XC Bumper Rath Racing XC grab bar White bros e2 racing exhaust Motowoz shocks front and rear Rath Racing full skid Precision Pro Stabilizer Precision shock n vibe Rath Racing steering stem w/anitvibe Houser Slicast Long Travel +1/2" wide pro series K&N air filter Jet kit Trail Tech Vapor Terry cable dual gasser Bikemaster Trugel Battery Sunstar sprockets and chain Factory Backing graphics kit. Those are the plans as of right now. I think that once it’s all done it will be a pretty sweet machine and should treat me very well. I have already started ordering parts for it and with every paycheck I order something else. I sure can’t wait to be back home and actually build this thing. I will try and keep y’all updated on parts and you can believe that once I’m home I will post pics of the build process. Until next time, take care and enjoy riding!

Welcome to the site you will find alot of useful information, and a very helpful group of guys.
As far as the build I would say stay away from the cylinder works cylinder it seems to be a hit or miss on reliability with theirs And would highly recommend running a GT Thunder rotor and single sided sprocket guard. But other than that good luck with the build and post some pics up of the progress as you build it. |

Good to know about the Cylinder Works problem. This is exactly why I posted this up, I was hoping to get feedback from people who have used some of the engine products.
I have actually already ordered the sprocket guard, and I will look into the GT Thunder rotor. *EDIT* I have the sprocket guard, not a rotor guard. And I realize GT Thunder is a brand for sprocket & rotor guards, not a rotor brand. I get it now. lol. Thanks!

I would also stick with the OEM crank and if you don't mind running race fuel I would go with the GT Thunder high comp. piston. The good thing about their piston it uses a stock ring setup so seems to get longer life out of it so far. Just my opinion though

Yeah, to be honest, I'm not fully sure what I will use; OEM or WR. I have read a lot of posts on here about them and it seems people are kinda in the middle on it. I also can't decide on race gas or not. It can be found pretty easy back home but I don't think I'm fully sold on it yet. Maybe I can still be convinced though.
The one area of a quad I don't really know a whole lot about is engine mods. My Polaris Predator was one heck of a machine and I never had one single problem or issue with the engine the whole 4 years I owned it. I bought it brand new. Now that I have to tear into this YFZ engine when I get home I'm really looking into the possibilities. So all suggestions are much appreciated.

So should I just order an OEM cylinder instead then?

Welcome about!! I was told the OEM rod has a beefier wrist pin them the WR set up and the only good thing about the WR set up is that its alittle lighter for faster reving. Again just what I was told. I would stick with pump gas myself, its cheaper and you can still make alot of power with it.

OK, so just a little update.
So after having my buddy send me a few more pics of the "2006" YFZ that I bought on eBay, it turns out it was actually a 2005!! After contacting the seller and explaining the differences in the early model and late model YFZ's, I asked for a refund of $600 so I could buy every thing needed to convert it over an 06+. The seller didn't even counter the offer and I was refunded $600. I used the money to buy a 2006 swing arm, carrier, axle, hubs, brake hub/rotor, caliper w/ lines, master cylinder, and pedal. I also bought a complete 2008 wire harness w/key switch, CDI, resister, headlight switch, etc. Now, after going over my parts list again and realizing that I'm replacing dang near 90% of the quad with new stuff, I had a realization... I might as well just buy another YFZ frame with the left over refunded money and put all the new stuff on the new frame. So I also bought a 2007 frame. I'm going to build the '07 frame from ground up with all the new goodies for XC racing. Then with the '05, what ever few parts I use from it to complete the '07 build, I'll replace and just find an engine for it and it can be the wife's new quad.

Oh, and I've also changed some of the other build plans. New plans in bold.

Just for kicks, here a couple pics of how the '05 sits right now. The kicker will be coming off of the '05 and will be installed on the '07. I'd post a pic of the '07 but its only a red frame as of right now...

I'd like to gusset the frame, I just don't know if I'll be able to swing it. I am new to the YFZ frames, but I know my old Predator frame was stout, and I never had any sort of issue with it at all. I'm sure hoping for a couple mean machines. Now that my deployment will be ending soon, it's time to start buying all the parts so it's all ready for me to build as soon as I get home.
