Has anyone mounted a trail tech vapor to the R bikes yet? Ideally I'd like to mount it, recessed into the bar pad. Heres the deal, I have precision bar clamps, is this going to work? Any pics of the vapor mounted into the bar pad or any tips would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hi bbcmudtruck, I have been thinking about getting myself a trail-tec, let us know how the mounting goes, I would be interested in seeing some photos.
Thanks mate

I installed a Vapor on my 2010 YFZ450X. I'd call it a simple bolt on with a couple of exceptions.
First, the bracket that comes off the handle bar is too short for the stock steering stem clamp cover. The plate at the top of the stock steering stem is butt ugly (imho). So I want to keep the cover and had to move the unit off center to mount it above the cover. Second, I had to add wire to the power wire so I could go directly to the battery. Third, I plugged in the tack wire directly to the orange coil wire (second option) because I thought wrapping the wire around the spark plug wire looked hokey and would unravel. Had to call Trail Tech about which wire to hook up to and they were great. Even sent a picture of the hook up. Fourth, (and I still have to call to confirm that this is OK) for the speed sensor I drilled a hole in the plastic disc brake backing plate. With the magnetic bolt installed in the rotor the sensor hits the bolt ! I made sure the sensor was flush with the locking nut. It calls out for 1/2 inch or less clearance. Doesn't say anything about contacting tho. The backing plate is flexable enough that I don't think it will hurt but, we'll see after I call. Fifth, I had to loop the speed sensor wire as it seems about 6 - 8 inches too long. The other electrical wires could use a few more inches of length especially if you have a taller steering stem or have taller bar clamps. Hope this info answers some questions. I'll get back to ya all after I find out about the speed sensor problem. |

Called Trail Tech yesterrday about the speed sensor hitting the magnetic disc mounting bolt. The gal was like "Well duh. It will wear out if it hits" (no actual statement but the impression I got. So no real help there for an alternate instl. I'll check the "C" bracket to see if it eliminates the condition but, I don't want to remove the backing plate. I may try to heat it up enough to bend/warp it so it clears. Pix of the installation later

Sorry bbc, just now saw your thread. Ive got a Trailtech vapor installed on my 2011 450R, with no problems at all. I still have the stock bars and stock bar cover. I mounted mine directly "thru" the black handlebar cover to keep it centered, and drilled a hole thru the cover to run the wires through. i know this doesnt answer your question about the bar pad, just thought Id chime in. BTW, if you set your shift lights on yours, let me know where you set it and how you like it. Im still playing with mine to see where i get the most power to the ground without over-rev, but work is keeping me busy lol

I actually took mine off of the bike after one ride. I couldn't get it to look clean enough while mounted. So if anyone wants one with literally 1 hour of ride time, I'd sell it cheap.

Sorry I haven't been on very much lately, this is my busy season for work. I have the precision claps as well and just really couldn't get it to sit as clean as I hoped. I have 5 pms about selling it so I will get back to each of you in the order you pm'd me. Also, I have to wait for my billet inline temp gauge to arrive before I can send it out. Again sorry for the late response.
