Default sand tires, what size?

so i need some info on what size of tire to get. is there a disadvantage to having 18 tall in the rears for sand? i like 18s for mx, but r they too small for sand?

18's are way to small for sand, 21's are good for general duning and some racing, 22's if your drag racing.

Not to hi jack Ctown but Im looking to buy some too I think im going with 22'' but Is there a advantage to the tires with the paddles going straight across like in john jr pics or the ones V shaped such as ITP sand stars?

it all depends on your style. itps do fine for all around. they slide easier.

I like 21 12 8 a lot. 6 paddle. climbs hills with ease. just lets the bike Rev harder and floats very well. 8 to me is too much hookup for duning but better in flat drags. I've heard 7 works great

21x12x8 6 or 7 paddle hauler or extremes, you won't regret this choice. I ran 20x10x10 8 paddle for 4 years and it was night and day going to the 21's.

I'd say the first question to ask is what type of riding do you do? And be honest with yourself. Hill shooter, tree shooter, drag racer, general duning, etc. IMHO there is no perfect size to do it all, but damn near perfect size to do one.....

21 12 8 seems to do well in all the above, not the best in each, but very good,

if the hils arent huge than a 7paddle would do well. not that it wouldnt do well on a big hill, just a bit more hookup than 6, and still less than 8 so you can break them loose easier

I noticed that most of you are using that Mohawk style front tire
Are they the best wheel for the sand or will a dirt tire do?
I mostly ride sand.. sliding and dune climbing

Ive currently got a set of 20x11x9 8 paddle tripple buffs and they are honestly a little to much. They did do very well, but I think a set of 21x11x8 7paddle tripple buffs would do better. I'd sell my 20s if your interested.

Well i have a set of 22x11x8 8 paddle SLS w a 72 ro, and i couldnt be happier with them. I use to have a set of 20x10x10 8 paddle, WOW what a difference in power and just hooking up with the SLS tires.

21" is probably the best tire for all around dune riding. You can jump, climb, and turn well with the 21". The 20's will dig more if you're racing hills, but if your riding style is aggressive turning and jumping, the 20's can't be beat. The 22's will float the best and are the fastest when racing hills. The downfall, they flex more when jumping and turning.
Don't over paddle your machine, seen this countless times. My wifes '09 YFZR 450 has a 480 kit pumping out close to 54 hp and we run 8 paddle bead to bead 21" Gliders. If it was a Hauler, I'd go with a 6 or 7 paddle. Gliders do not rob power as much as Haulers on long hills. You're from Idaho and probably hit St. Anthony. Haulers seem to work a little better there then the Gliders from my experience. Also remember, we're at roughly 4500' elevation and not making the power others are at close to sea level. Stick with an 8" wheel
