Working to pay the bills and riding on the weekends, only 2 seasons here wet and dry so we get to ride just about every weekend :) when I am not riding I am up the river fishing, although fishing has taken a back seat since I got the quad......

Awesome man! I wish I could make it down under some day! My Mom spent several years down in Brisbane... Often I mix riding and fishing together bro, lol... I ride a local spot then 4-wheel my way down to the river and catch Bass, catfish, etc... it's beautifull!

Sounds great, I should do the same, but it is too hard getting off the quad ;) Aussie is a nice enough place, little 2 regulated for my like though, that is why I am here. I have a mate looking for a quad out of the states, he wants a 2009 or later, you know of anyone selling?

Another very good post Trxxx. In my opinion this is one of the threads that needs to be stickied.

I just looked into the used market for the R and there are very few available that I could find... I guess people are hanging on to them and plus there arn't that many out there as our economy fell off a cliff right before they came out.

There are still some leftover 2010 Xs left on dealer lots that they're willing to deal on. I got my Bill Ballance Edition out the door for $6700 but you could do better than that if you went through a dealer that wasn't going to charge you tax because you weren't registering it in the US. AZ sales tax is a bit high so everything costs more here.

Great info and set up, thanks a ton.
What would you change (if anything) for a 150lbs rider riding pretty much just trails?

Thanks for the info, what is the tax on these in the states? Reason we are looking there is Yamaha Australia is out of hand with their prices, cost me nearly triple the figure you suggested, for mine with full pipe, pc 3 and nurfs, go figure!!!!!

I meant that AZ sales tax is high compared to many other states. It is somewhere around 10%. The tax will vary based on which state it comes from though, and some dealers are willing to overlook tax on a quad that will be shipped elsewhere and taxed there, although I don't see that happening on an overseas sale.

Just go to ATV Trader and select Yamaha, New 2010 and older, Four wheeler, and delete the 2010 and older (leaving new) and type YFZ450X (or R) in the text box. You will get pages of results from all over the US showing unsold new stock from 2009 to 2012. Cheapest YFZ450X on there is $5200 in Texas, and the cheapest Bill Ballance edition isn't much more. Cheapest YFZ450X I found rang in at $6200.

Dammit I believe I've hijacked this thread. Sorry trxxx. Still a great write-up; I'm planning to adjust mine this weekend. Trxxx, where did you get the tool that you are using to adjust the preload? I don't want to beat the hell of my gateways with a screwdriver if I don't have to.

You can get the spanner wrench from most bike shops or the dealer. You don't really need it but it's nice sometimes. On the fronts, once you loosen the lock ring, with the suspension fully extended, you can pretty much just grab the spring including the adjuster ring with both hands and turn it to adjust. Then just tap your lock ring tight. The rear can be done that way too if you have enough room.
